Retinyl Palmitate

Hello! I started using a few skincare products recently that contain retinyl palmitate, however, I've read conflicting information when doing research about this ingredient (for example, causes skin to become thin, increase cancer risk, etc). I like how my skin looks with these products, but I want to make sure I'm not potentially causing damage. Is retinyl palmitate safe to use as part of a daily skincare regimen and are there any concerns to take into consideration? Also, is it safe to use around eyes? Thank you!

Hello Stephanie,

Thank you for reaching out. It can be overwhelming when looking at different ingredients, especially when looking in depth to each one. Information is usually conflicting and for every positive you can find a negative.

A lot of the time the concerns we see with certain ingredients are based off studies (sometimes dated) done with an ingredient in a much higher percentage than we would ever see or be exposed to in a formulation for cosmetics and daily use. I work for a brand that uses this ingredient in several of their formulations that I apply daily in my regimen. With that being said, it is important to use what you are comfortable with.

Retinyl Palmitate applied topically is known for its antioxidant properties and is used in several professional skincare brands. As far as concerns I would look at the specific brand you purchased from and check their instructions on how to use. Each formulation will be different depending on the brand. It is not always dependent on a specific ingredient for the eye area rather than the formulation in its entirety.

Warmly,
