Of all the topics that could be highlighted in the month of July, hydration screams to be at the top of the list. Even though hydration may seem to be a simple topic, it is often set to the wayside and overlooked as the essential foundational component of healthy skin that it is. It is a well-known fact that the human body can survive longer without food than it can without water. The hydration level of the body affects energy levels, clarity, body temperature, nutrient delivery, sleep quality, and mood. Hydration pretty much impacts every function of the body. This equally applies to skin. Skin care professionals often focus on the visible concerns of clients, such as fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, elastosis, skin tone, texture, and even acne. While these efforts have substantial merit, it remains a fact that if the core integrity of skin is impaired, so too will be any efforts to improve any conditions. Think about it logically. If one’s body is dehydrated, a workout may not be as effective. Dehydration can also affect how well one is able to concentrate, focus, and even multitask. The same scenario applies to skin. When skin is dehydrated, it struggles to balance itself and work efficiently. Simple dehydration slows cellular turnover, triggers inflammation, creates a bacteria-friendly environment, and increases sensitivity. As skin struggles to perform its basic function of protection, it can in no way assist with additional tasks. Take that one step further and consider the products and ingredients that are often used to improve skin conditions. They may be vitamins, acids, exfoliants, or things that, under normal circumstances, do not have a negative impact on skin, but when applied to skin lacking its structural integrity, become irritating and aggravating.
