Boldijarre Koronczay, recipient of the ISPA Visionary Award, is an icon of the spa industry. After surviving leukemia during his childhood in Hungary, Koronczay moved to Vancouver, Canada with his brother to follow their dreams. Today, Éminence Organic Skin Care is an internationally recognized brand. Koronczay has personally trained over a quarter of a million skin care professionals in the past two decades. How did you decide that your current career is the right one for you?My mom and grandma both inspired me to study aesthetics after high school; it seemed like a natural fit as I had grown up watching my mom give facials to her clients. I was one of the first men to graduate with this degree in Hungary. What do you see as upcoming trends in the industry? We are seeing new ingredients cross over into skin care from the natural foods industry, which has outpaced the spa industry in educating consumers about the importance of natural, organic, and biodynamic ingredients. As a result, consumers are demanding quality products and ingredients. Is there a particular moment or procedure where most professionals go wrong? What could they alter for a better result?I find that many skin care professionals are opposed to selling products. However, they are professionals and it is their responsibility to educate clients about homecare. It is important for professionals to change their mindset from sales-focused to knowledge-sharing. What advice do you have for someone planning to start a career in this field?Always work as if someone you want to impress is watching. What is your secret to keeping life in balance and enjoying the journey? My experience with having leukemia as a child taught me to always enjoy the moment and see the positive. The cup of life is half full and I am grateful for every day. How did you come up with the name of your business? My brother and I were looking at synonyms for 'being number one' and came upon the word 'eminence.' Right away, we knew this was the perfect name for our company. Here is more of our chat with Boldijarre: How long have you been in the aesthetics industry?I have been formally trained in the skin care industry for 20 years, but I grew up watching my mom give facials to her clients. What credentials do you currently hold?I am a licensed aesthetician and massage therapist trained in Budapest, Hungary. What various roles and positions have you held within this industry?I have been a locker room attendant, spa front desk receptionist, salon assistant (sweeping the floors and shampooing clients), apprentice aesthetician, licensed aesthetician, licensed massage therapist, international trainer, president of Éminence Organic Skin Care, and motivational speaker. Which of these roles taught you the most or had the most impact on you and how?As a locker room attendant, I learned how to be respectful and humble and take great pride in my work. I believe that everyone should have an entry-level position to learn how to treat others with respect. Has there been a constant theme that has led you from one point to the next throughout your training and career? (as in asking questions, reading certain material, etc.)Throughout my career, I have learned that you don’t know what you don’t know and that it is important to always ask questions. What characteristics or skills set you apart from your peers and enabled you to be so successful so quickly? I spent 20 years building Éminence Organic Skin Care, so I would not say that success came quickly. The characteristics that set us apart from our peers were determination to succeed and constant dedication to hard work. My sense of humor and my funniness and willingness to be different from other trainers also made a big difference in the popularity of my classes. What adaptations have you made over the years to stay relevant in the industry? To stay relevant in the industry, I am always studying the latest and greatest ingredients from aesthetics and medical journals. I also take courses from other industries, like leadership and presentation training, to upgrade my own skill set. What has surprised you most during your professional journey? What has surprised me the most during my professional journey is the way people have fallen in love with the Éminence brand. I recently had a fan send me a box of handmade magnets, cards, and gifts with our logo and pictures from the company website. What are the greatest pressures, strains, or anxieties in the work?Keeping up with personally visiting our partner spas as the brand has grown. I pride myself on maintaining personal connections with our customers, but this keeps me traveling for business for about nine months out of the year. How and where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration from watching comedy shows and reading joke books. What do you see are upcoming trends in the industry? We are seeing new ingredients cross over into skin care from the natural foods industry. The food industry has outpaced the spa industry in educating consumers about the importance of natural, organic, and Biodynamic ingredients. We are seeing this education cross over into consumer demand not only for quality products, but also for ingredients. Why do you think people go to a particular spa?Clients are loyal to a particular spa when they experience extraordinary results, extraordinary customer service, and a customized experience with many sensory touchpoints throughout the treatment. Clients want the wow factor from the products’ feel and smell, but also want results to treat their skin. What do you believe separates the best establishments from the rest? The best spas are dedicated to consistent, constant training for all of their employees. Is there a particular ingredient that you feel is a “super” ingredient? If so, why?I would not name one particular ingredient as super, but I would say that Biodynamic ingredients as a whole are incredible because of their purity and extremely high nutritional value. Do you have a signature treatment or technique that your clients love – a classic of sorts? What makes it so loved? My Hungarian facial massage techniques extend beyond the face to the arms, neck, and back. Clients perfer this massage style because they see immediate results while feeling completely relaxed. At the end of the treatment, the client is on a different level of relaxation than they have ever experienced from a facial before. What tool(s) would your treatment room (or business) not be complete without and why?My training sessions would not be complete without my treasure chest of props, including several rubber chickens, because I use fun and entertainment to educate. Infusing humor into the training session keeps the attendees’ attention and makes trainings fun and memorable. What is the one piece of advice you give to every client you see?Make sure you use sunscreen! Do you or your company support any particular causes or charitable organizations? If so, who and why? Éminence Organic Skin Care is committed to giving back to people and the environment. Our Forests for the Future Program, which is in partnership with nonprofit organization, Trees for the Future, plants a tree in a developing country for every Éminence retail product sold. Éminence is the first skin care company to plant 5 million trees in over 19 countries! We also have our own charity, the Éminence Kids Foundation, which donates organic produce and foods to sick children around the world to aid in their recovery and long-lasting wellness. What are your hobbies when not working?I love anything to do with flying! I recently went indoor sky diving in a huge wind tunnel; that was an amazing experience. Do you have a company or personal motto by which you live?Reach for the stars, but keep your feet on the ground. Can you share something that most people wouldn't know about you?Growing up, I used to go hang gliding off Hármashatárhegymountain in Budapest. Other than your products, what are the greatest assets and strengths your company offers? At Éminence Organic Skin Care, one of our greatest strengths is providing industry-leading education at tradeshows and master classes, hosting our own regional events, and providing quarterly education to our spa partners. We have been awarded the American Spa Magazine Professional’s Choice for Favorite [Product Line] for Education for seven consecutive years! What is the toughest decision you have had to make at your company?,During my first business trip, I traveled for three months, visited every single spa across five states, and I had no orders. The toughest decision I have had to make was to keep trying and to believe that, in time, people would understand the importance of natural skin care. How are you tenacious?I believe you should never compromise on quality. What is the most important lesson you have learned from owning your own business?I learned that to be successful, you need to provide large company-quality service with small company personal touches. What has been the biggest change in the skin care industry?Consumers now understand the importance of natural, organic, and Biodynamic skin care and specifically request these products. When I first started, people literally laughed at me when I showed them products with fresh fruit, vegetable seeds, pulps, and fibers. What is your biggest wish for the industry going forwards?I wish for the spa industry, as a whole, to be committed to green practices and dedicated to the health of people and the planet. I wish for every spa and product line in the industry to be actively involved with charitable actions and provide education about health and well-being for future generations. What goals do you hope to accomplish in the new year?I hope to grow our Éminence Kids Foundation throughout the United States. What sparked your interest in skin care?I survived childhood leukemia partly due to the organic foods I was fed by my family while undergoing treatment. This holistic care left a lasting impression on me, teaching me that it is necessary to nourish the body inside and out and provide wellness through skin care. Which honor or achievement are you most proud of?Being honored with the Visionary of the Year award from the International Spa Association was my greatest moment of pride. This award proved that all of the miles spent on the road each year and the thousands of hours of work were truly worth every moment. You’re a well-known figure, what don’t people know about you?People do not realize how much work goes into it the illusion of overnight success. Success is working all the time and making it look easy. Each year, I spend hours preparing new jokes for each stage performance, even though it looks fun and easy. What are some challenges that you face working with your family?I get asked this question often, especially working alongside my brother every day. Honestly, we have never genuinely had a conflict. Could you ever have imagined that your company would become what it is today?I had no idea that Éminence would grow into the internationally loved, award-winning brand that it is today. I think back to the first business trip where I had zero return and am so thankful for how the company has grown. Most importantly, this growth is what allows us to make a real difference in the world with our Forests for the Future initiative and Éminence Kids Foundation. Who does it right in Hollywood?Leonardo DiCaprio is an admirable celebrity. He is dedicated to green practices and providing clean water to remote countries. Despite being in the movie business since childhood and starring in countless blockbuster films, he was just honored with his first Oscar this year; that is tenacious. If you could treat one person, who would it be?I would love to provide a facial to the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Loved and cherished by the people, Diana was not only a stunning beauty, but also someone who gave her heart and limitless hours to charitable causes. What is your top beauty secret? When rinsing the face, alternate hot and cold water temperatures to give the pores a workout. What is your long-term vision for your company?I envision Éminence Organic Skin Care continuing to grow, allowing for the feeding of children everywhere with organic foods, fruits, and vegetables.Want to read more?
