Some prefer brows that are softly angled or have a high arch, while others want a straight brow, a rounded brow, or a curved brow. The choices are endless. The shape of the face is the most important consideration in eyebrow shaping while they can make the eyes appear larger, make the face look thinner, and provide an overall cleaner, more confident look. Microcurrent – A Powerful Tool for Antiagingpresented by Tina Abnoosi
The truth behind what makes clients appear older is hidden within the nervous system. With age the peripheral nerves system declines in conduction velocity. By focusing on understanding and correcting the cause the outcome can naturally normalize. The mechanism in which the nerves operate and addressing a preventative application is explored in this brand new webinar. The process of aging is interlocked to the declining neuromuscular activities that cause muscle atrophy. Fortunately, skin care professionals now have a tool that can help delay and even prevent such activities by injecting a low-level of current into an aging body. A microcurrent treatment is a method of sending energy to channel the decaying nerves to awaken and rejuvenate its functions, while also helping the body to rebuild itself.
Tina Abnoosi, E.E., L.E., CEO of TAMA Research Corporation, is an electrical engineer with 30 years of experience in the design and manufacturing of electrical and electronic components. With more than 15 years of experience in design, manufacturing, and application of microcurrent equipment, treatments, and techniques, she is a world class leader in the field.

Yvonne Berg- Learning with a Legend
Minnesota Cosmetologist of the Year, Yvonne Berg, credits education as the key to her success.
When you are talking about a “Legend,” where should the recap begin?
When it is Yvonne Berg, of Minneapolis, it begins with a sense of gratitude.
“My mother started it all,” she says, “and showed by example the truly committed spirit. She was a cosmetologist and continues with hair styling until she was 82 years old. And then there was my husband, Bill, who never offered a discouraging word. He was my helpmate, my partner, and he kept me going in everything that I did.”
Yvonne’s involvement in the cosmetics industry began with many hours spent in her mother’s salon. Cosmetology seemed a natural career choice for Yvonne. She graduated from Francis Nystrom Beauty School and paved a direct path to a lifetime career. Well, it was almost a direct path.
“Skin care always interested me, even back when Pond’s was the only ‘professional’ skin cream available,” Yvonne says. “Throughout my experiences in styling salons, I always felt that something was missing or that I was missing out on something.”
Yvonne later spent five years at Maxim’s in the old St. Paul Emporium, where she advanced from assistant manager to manager to supervisor. The next nine years found her at the Dayton/Hudson Corporation’s landmark salon, the South dale Looking Glass.
There she was introduced to Dion’s Electro Therapy, a manufacturer of electrical therapy machines for hospitals. Dion’s had developed a skin care machine, rather like a vacuum, and had a limited product line including cleaner, tonic, mask, and creams called Facial Firm. The company wanted Yvonne to move to Huntington Beach and teach skin care using their products.
But a move to California was not in her plans, so Dion’s suggested she open her own salon and represent their products in Minneapolis. While Yvonne analyzed her options, Bill encouraged her. Whenever she said, “Maybe not,” he would respond, “Why not?” Finally they both asked, “What’s the worst that can happen?” and mortgaged their house to launch Yvonne’s Skin Care Spa. It was the only salon geared exclusively for skin care in the Midwest. She went from managing more than 40 employees to working alone.
She then began working with Minneapolis television programs such as “Tin Cities Today”, “PM Magazine”, and “Good Company”, hosted by Sharon Anderson and Steve Adelman.
“I did everything on those shows, even pedicures,” recalls Yvonne. “More than covering local news, this type of television program wanted to be on the advent of something new.” While skin care in Europe had been in place forever, in 1973 a salon dedicated to skin care in Minnesota was relatively new.
Traveling to California in 1974 for an advanced aesthetics class with Anita of Denmark, Yvonne wondered what she was doing there. Her limited knowledge didn’t fit the term “advanced.” it was then she realized that education would be the key to her success, and she began training with some of the nation’s and the world’s best skin care experts. By 1975 she had studied aesthetics in New York; taught classes for Faial Firm; and taken classes in makeup, advanced aesthetics, massage, and paper wrap for nails --- another first in Minnesota.
After weighing the pros and cons for six months Yvonne moved her salon to Edina, a suburb of Minneapolis. The salon had 12 employees and was known as the Midwest’s first full special services salon. With two rooms in her salon, Yvonne offered all skin care services in the front and massage therapy, steam room and shower, manicuring, and waxing the back. She continued her education in New York, California, Canada, Florida, and Georgia. During that time she met, and was influenced by beauty experts including Robert Diemer, Mark Traynor, and Dr. James Fulton.
As Yvonne’s business continued to grow, she realized there were few educational opportunities in the Midwest for those who wanted to study skin care. By 1980, her salon was revamped again to include a professional training center, called Yvonne’s Esthetic Concepts. Serving only licensed aestheticians and cosmetologists, the training center became known as a post-graduate facility.
Yvonne’s Esthetic Concepts promoted a clinical atmosphere where aestheticians could improve their image, as well as their education. In addition to skin care methods, the courses included intensive study in cosmetic chemistry, promotion, sales, and therapeutic psychology.
“I have so much pride in my profession,” Yvonne says, “and I know that caring for people, clients or peers, brings many rewards. I feel so good to know that I have made a difference in someone’s life.”
Her caring and willingness to share her knowledge is evident through her many professional affiliations. In Minnesota, Yvonne worked diligently with the Department of Commerce to structure aesthetics education fro licensing and the state’s rules and regulations that would govern the license. She motivated the Minnesota Cosmetology Association to expand its educational committee to include an aesthetics sections, and she was appointed the section’s first director.
She was also instrumental in forming the National Cosmetology Association’s EstheticsAmerica and expanding the educational committee, Hair America, to include skin care professionals. The formation of EstheticsAmerica lead to a 15,000 member increase for the NCA, as many other professional skin care associations recognized the value of joining forces. Beyond her local, state, and national memberships, Yvonne is also a member of Aesthetician’s International, Esthetician’s Pharmacology Institute., and the Para Medical Skin Care Association. She has attended conferences around the world, including the CIDESCO International Congress.
Product development has been of special interest to Yvonne since the early ‘80s when she began testing products for Robert Diemer and the American Institute of Esthetics. She also worked with Dr. Fulton to develop products for Clinical Formula, many of which are still being used today. Through her own company, she developed a variety of aloe and Vitamin A hydrating moisture products, and her newest venture is the creation of a line of liposome products called Merod. With her product knowledge, paramedical skin care education, and experiences, Yvonne works with many of Minnesota’s cosmetic surgeons, acting as the on going skin care specialist for recovering patients.
Yvonne’s daughter, Judy, now owns Yvonne’s Esthetic Concepts. But the sale of Y.E.C. did not meant he end of Yvonne Berg. Along with developing products, she remains on the teaching staff at the educational center, now located in Bloomington, Indiana, and gives skin care lectures throughout the country. And once again, she ahs returned to the salon.
“People would not let me quit,” she says laughing. “So a little over two years ago, Loretta Leaf, Denise Ormberg, and I decided to combine our specialties in a smaller salon, and the result is Yvonne Plus Two.”
Many accolades adorn the walls at Yvonne’s Esthetic Concepts and Yvonne Plus Two. The American Institute of Esthetics awarded Yvonne with Clinic of the Year, the Directors Award of Excellence, and Regional Director for 1982, ‘84, and ‘86. She was named Minnesota’s Cosmetologist of the Year in 1986 for leadership in the community and the advancement of the skin care industry, and in 1989 she received Dermascope’s Certificate of Accomplishment.
This September, Yvonne was recognized by the Minnesota Cosmetology Association with its highest award, the Vera Slater Medallion. The medallion is awarded to those who have exhibited the greatest contribution to the success of the industry.
“Education kept me going and growing,” she says. “My respect for others makes me want to share the knowledge I have gained, and my successes are shared with everyone who has shared with me. This award belongs to many people.”
Vincent Jeffre - Roux Kehoe: Leader and Legend
“Being less than the best encourages men to do better; but, when and if you are the best, you can never do less.” -Vincent K-R Kehoe
Quoting Vincent J-R Kehoe, a professional make-up artist, as well as aesthetician, author, historian, and photographer, Dermascope recognizes him as a “renaissance man,” a leader in his field, and someone who believes in principles and promises.
Vincent J-R Kehoe is a man who has deservedly earned the title of Legend from the field of thousands of aestheticians across the United States and around the world. Because of his outstanding contributions in the cosmetic industry, and the sharing of his multivalent in the fields of photography, are, literature, history, documentation, and broadcasting, Kehoe deserves the acknowledgement of Dermascope.
A well-respected colleague of Kehoe’s someone who has known him for almost thirty years, Ron Renee’ reflects, “I admire him for his great contributions in the makeup industry, for his creativity in films, and for his sharing knowledge with other colleagues in this great profession.” Mutual goals led these two men and other to organize the “aestheticians” a new wave of cosmetically inclined people who did not want to be just hairdressers, but rather “skin specialist” - a category that, in the 60’s was not licensed in the United States. The cooperation between Kehoe and Renee’ led to the growth and development of the Aestheticians International Association. (AIA)
Kehoe write about getting started. “My first experience with the beauty business, or rather, the beauty salon business, was a referral to Karl Mamlok, then the President of the Turner Hall Corporation, who had acquired the Dermetics line for their firm. I was subsequently hired by Turner Hall to redesign the rather staid, but established line of Dermetics, and write a pamphlet to go along with the new principles I would introduce for the promotion of this line in the beauty salon industry. Although this brand was sold in some limited department stores, its main new thrust was to be in field of the beauty salon.”
Kehoe progressed by giving classes in professional make-up artistry, based on his years as a professional studio make-up artist for over three thousand major stage, film, and television productions. It became apparent to Mamlok that Kehoe should be the one who would introduce this new line from the platforms at professional beauty shows. Kehoe stayed with Turner Hall for three years, and was then contacted by the International Beauty Show (IBS) to be the Director of Make-up for their shows, from 1963-1967.
To arrive at this level of expertise, Kehoe’s background had been in stage make-up, where his first professionally paid job was in 1940 with the Lowell Light Opera Guild. After serving for over three years in the Armed Services and participating in World War II, he attended a theatre school for a year, and then moved to New York City to pursue a career in “shoe business.” 1946-1948 were the lean years for the struggling artist.
Kehoe attended The American Theatre Wing Professional Training Program for veterans, and then offered t do make-up test on camera for the newly organized CBS-TV station that was being built at Grand Central Station. They had no make-up artist at the time, so his contributions were a significant improvement. His first paid show for CBS-TV was Captain Billy’s Mississippi Music Hall at the Knickerbockers Club on the East Side in 1948. From there, he did the make-up on all the original Studio One and Ford Theatre shows, plus many of the early studio interview, panel and quiz shows, plus other productions. While at CBS, he collaborated with the cosmetic chemist, Dave Kronish to develop a special crème make-up line for them. Thus he sold his first special make-up materials to a network.
In 1949, he went into freelance makeup work, doing both films and television, working at NBC and ABC. At NBC, he spent two years as Director of Make-up for all the original half-hour Hallmark Theater and Hallmark Hall of Fame series, plus working at WABD Dumont network on Opera Cameos, Flying Tigers and other shows.
Kehoe continued in television and film, until his first experience with the beauty salon industry in the fall of 1959. Meanwhile, he had completed a BFA degree in motion picture and film production at Columbia University and written the first professional-level book on make-up artistry, The Technique of Film and Television Makeup. Furthermore, he had spent two years in Spain writing and photographing two award-winning books on los toros within the culture of Spain. Aficionado! was lauded by Saturday Reviews as “one of the finest, most comprehensive, best illustrated expositions of tauromaquia available to the Anglo-Saxon reader.” Kehoe perfected his camera techniques by doing both stills for the book and completing a documentary color film on the bulls of Span.
By the time Kehoe started with the IBS, he had his own line of cosmetics, The Research Council of Make-up Artist (RCMA), and had written a new book, The Make-up Artist in the Beauty Salon, to promote and explain the approach better to the salon industry. Working very closely with him, in RCMA since 1966, his wife Gena has been, extols Kehoe, “my model, Vice-President of sales, and colleague make-up artist.” The Kehoes’ cosmetic line is professional, and is still not sold as consumer goods through any department, drug, or specialty store, nor house to house, but is strictly limited to the professional make-up artists in studios and beauty salons.
Toward the end of the 60’s and into the 70’s Kehoe continued to use his beauty expertise in the film industry, participating in a wide range of major motion pictures. Among his film credits are one of the first cult-horror films in color, The Blob, starring Steve McQueen, and the Academy Award performance of Cliff Robertson in Charly.
As the RCMA Company was growing with increased business, Kehoe decided to put full effort into expansion, rather than pursue further studio work. He continued to put on seminars, give lectures, and make appearances for his line of cosmetics, solely for professionals. As Kehoe expresses, “To many, winning awards in competition or work is of major importance. However, to me, being a professional studio makeup artist and contributing to the entire industry has been the most gratifying experience. Awards and accolades pale to written works that last in the fields, and the giving of one’s experience and knowledge in seminars is of prime importance to the furthering and growth of the cosmetic world.. It is of great satisfaction when one of my former students is nominated or wins an award in the film or television industry”
When asked to sum up his philosophy of life, the approach to both the outer face and the inner face, Kehoe expressed, “Never compromise principles, nor promises, to those whom you have just adjured to represent, or given assurance to do so… Knowing when to change direction, completely, is a mark of leadership, especially when you expect others to follow you. Vacillation and indecision have no place in the true leader’s mind. Leaders who do not understand that they themselves are the sloe example of their position can never provide, with proper direction, an incentive to excel. Those who attempt to lead, without having sufficiently prepared themselves for disappointment, may never convey strength of purpose in their direction and position. As well, those who allow themselves to be led by those of inadequate direction and purpose must be willing to accept lack of accomplishment and loss of pride. Don’t give up, nor compromise control of your position; constantly forgive those who are sincere, but have made a mistake. Never go backwards, except for nostalgia, and never regret it. Be flexible, but firm, in your judgment and command. Loyalty is a prime necessity in life, so rid yourself of those who would attempt to destroy your aims, goals, obligations, and principles, and reward those who support you.”
DERMASCOPE salutes Legend, Vincent J-R Kehoe, who still leads aestheticians in the beauty, skin care industry. Still available for shoes as a guest artist, he ends, “All in all, if one does not really love the industry, warts and all, on seldom becomes successful in it.”
Sue Riley - The Gift of Giving
This legendary beauty and skin are expert shares her success with the industry and community.
Sue Riley’s beauty career began when she was a small girl visiting her aunt’s beauty salon in Durant, Okla. She took every opportunity to visit this exciting place, watching her aunt deal with a variety of customers and witnessing innovative facial techniques.
As she reached her teens, she was cutting her friends’ hair and working in a beauty salon on Saturday afternoons. At the encouragement of her husband, she enrolled in IsBell’s Beauty School in Dallas, beginning her love affair with aesthetics. Six months after graduation, and at the ripe old age of 19, she opened her first salon.
With six styling chairs and only employee (herself!), Sue began making a name for herself. “I was scared to death that I would not be a success,” Sue remembers. “Word of mouth spread about the ‘new salon in town,’ and within six months I had five employees working for me.”
She worked six days a week and spent Sunday afternoons cleaning and preparing the salon for the busy week ahead. With no formal business training and only two years after opening her first salon, a second salon was created, followed by a third seven years later.
Elements of Success
Over the years, Sue has credited her success to several things. She is extremely selective in location sites and hires only those who will work as “team” players and fir in with existing employees.
“I am alert to my competition and am competitive in every way,” she says.
Her salons are full-service, offering hair, skin and body care, as well as make-up, nails and a boutique boasting the latest in fashion and accessories. Her philosophy as a beauty professional is that she sincerely cares about each and every client who visits her salon.
“I try to be especially sensitive to each client as a person, not only mentally and physically, but also spiritually,” she says. It is her goal to not only make her clients look better, but to elevate their self-esteem and help them carry these feeling of self-worth throughout every phase of their life.
Continuing education has also been a priority in Sue’s career. “I have always believed that you can learn something from everyone that touched your life,” she says. “You need to continue attending shows and seminars, always striving to learn from other professionals.”
Sue conducts, teaches and directs business seminars, bringing together members of the Internal Revenue Service, employment commissions and other salon owners, covering just about everything needed to run a successful business.
She travels to local beauty schools and high schools, advising and lecturing on what beauty school students can expect after graduation. From young girls in Girl Scouts troops to peers in her profession, she gives of herself to bring out the best in others. And by constantly staying abreast of the latest trends and techniques, she has become an invaluable force behind her salon.
A Dynamic Duo
Speaking of her salon, Sue and partner Deniece Moss provide a unique combination. Friendly competitors in their neighborhood for a number of years (after Sue had sold two of her salons), the women merged their respective businesses and employees under one roof, creating Tres Chic, the largest full-service salon in North Dallas.
According to Sue, Deniece is a genius with perms and colors and handles that area of the salon. The two have built a diversified clientele ranging from young teens to corporate executives. The salon concept is that of a team working together to build an enthusiastic and pleasant work environment.
“I consider my employees as working with me, not for me,” Sue says. “We are all linked together by bonds of caring and sharing in each other’s lives. This is not only my profession, but is my avocation and statement of life.”
Sue and Deniece are dedicated to offering the latest in services and education. From skin and body care, hair and nail care, to the finishing touches of make-up and a trip to the boutique, Tres Chic strives to bring out a woman’s inner beauty.
Sue believes that skin care is a reflection of the depth of values within a person, not just a superficial luxury. By releasing a woman’s potential to become all she can be, her looks will better exemplify the substance beneath the vital, warm and appealing body image.
When clients express doubt regarding the financial aspect of skin and body care, she encourages them to take time for themselves. She helps them understand that when a woman looks good, she feels better about herself, and this feeling may be carried over into all aspects of her life.
Giving of Herself
Sue believes that educating their clients reaps rewards far beyond the doors of the salon. Skin care, make-up and hair care classes are taught as a complimentary service. Up to three hours may be spent going over the proper at-home skin care regimens and the importance of monthly facials, as well as the blending of colors and application of makeup. Women learn how to keep up the appearances of hair and nails between salon visits, and the classes and services combined keep them coming back.
It may sound as though Sue Riley rarely gets away from the salon. On the contrary, not only is she dedicated to helping those in her community, but she also takes it to the capital when necessary.
As a member of the Texas Professional Salon Owners Group, she is one of about 50 members lobbying for changes in state lows; she has lobbied for a bill requiring an increase in the numbers of hours needed to become a licensed aesthetician and manicurist, as well as legislation regarding licensing requirements for independent contractors.
During a recent Texas legislative sessions, Sue traveled to Austin weekly and realized her goal when these bills were passed and signed by the governor. Her group is one of a few of its kind in the United States striving for a more professional industry. “We’re not many, but we’re real loud!” Sue says.
As a whole, the salon is dedicated to community service and donates money, food and gifts to a home for abused families during the holiday season. Cookbooks are put together with the help of staff and clientele, and all proceeds are donated to area hospitals as well as national charities. The staff at Tres Chic also sponsors four to six style shows a year, again donating all profit to charity.
How does Sue Riley sum up her keys to success? “All in All, I love this business, and the past 30 years have certainly passed very quickly. I look forward to many more years of taking care of our clients and helping anyone seeking experience and knowledge.”
What Sue Riley’s Peers Say
“Sue is a total professional. She has always given of her time and herself to help and teach others, so they too can be true professionals.” Kathy Driscoll, director, National Aesthetics Speakers Bureau, Houston.
“Education is a priority for Sue Riley, so she is forever the teacher of staff and clients. She herself is an avid student with a voracious appetite for learning, hungry to learn new techniques for her clients.” Nancy Howe.
“She speaks softly but carries a big stick when it comes to her pride and dedication. Aesthetics in Texas should be very proud and thankful for Sue Riley. I know I am.” Deniece Moss, Tres Chic Salon, and Dallas.
“Of all the people I have met in Dallas through the business, Sue Riley stands out as the most involved and most willing to pursue excellence in the industry. She would be successful in any business.” King Hazle, Charlott’s Spa Salon, Dallas.
