Leading the Pack: Gina Marie McGuire

Skincare MakeupGina Marie McGuire has a passion for educating others on caring for their skin, inspiring true beauty, and making a difference in the beauty industry. McGuire has been a licensed aesthetician for over 31 years, specializing in product development, marketing, and education. The company is a family-owned business and they are proudly celebrating its 40th year anniversary of offering a holistic skin care and clean cosmetic line.

How did you decide that skin care was the right industry for you?

I had the privilege of growing up in the skin care industry. My mother formulated and developed our brand and named the company after me, her only daughter. It only made sense that I follow in her footsteps.

What do you see as an upcoming trend in the industry?

Although Ginamarie has been providing holistic skin care products for 40 years, I see the niche and the desire of professionals to want to offer their clientele holistic, healthy skin care and clean cosmetics.

What is your biggest hope for the industry going forward?

I personally would love to see the industry focus more on the health of skin rather than just its beauty. I realize beauty is the driving force for many of our product choices, but when we truly understand and treat skin from a holistic perspective, the results are amazing and, in turn, give the skin the natural beauty that we are striving for.

Why do you think people are loyal to certain brands?

I think loyalty to brands comes from trust – trust in what the brand offers and trust that the brand will live up to what it claims.

What advice do you have for someone planning to start a career in this field?

The advice I would offer to someone planning a career in the skin care industry is to stay true to your own philosophy and to what you hope to achieve. There are so many products and so many sales people that it becomes very easy for the consumer and the professional to become confused. A product either works or it does not – stick to what you believe and do not be swayed by trends.

Clarifying Mint Mask 18How did you come up with the name of your business?

Our product line was named after me, by my mother, the founder of Ginamarie Products.

What causes or charitable organizations do you or your company support?

I believe there is a real need for the younger generation to understand and feel what it means to be beautiful. On our website we offer a beauty blog called GM Girls. This innovative platform, utilizing social media, is designed for young women. GM Girls inspires others through monthly articles posted. These blog posts contain beauty tips and tricks and are posted on our interns’ personal social media accounts in order to reach their peers. I started this internship program because I truly believe there is a missing link for young girls and women. Today, there are many mixed messages about what it means to be beautiful. Our GM Girls are the role models of what true beauty stands for and understand that beauty is more encompassing than the media portrays.

Which honor or achievement are you most proud of? Have you won any awards?

I am most proud of being in business for 40 years. I have seen the changes in the industry – and the trends – and Ginamarie has withstood the test of time. Most recently, we are proud that our Facial Toning Treatment just won an award in DERMASCOPE’s 2018 Aestheticians’ Choice Awards.

How do you approach the unknown?

I approach the unknown by trusting in God, knowing who I am, and understanding that when opportunities are presented to me, both the positive and the challenging moments in my life become moments of gratitude and growth.

What’s the best way to keep your eye on future results?

The best way to keep your eye on future results is to know where you are and where you want to go. Self-awareness and education are two key factors in achieving success.

How do you keep your feelings from clouding your decision-making?

Once again, I believe self-awareness is the key. When we know who we are and what we stand for, decision-making becomes easier. Feelings can come and go, but when we base our decisions on facts, not feelings, we are almost always guaranteed a positive end result.

What dreams and goals inspired you to succeed?

My dream to expand and grow the business and my desire to inspire true beauty has been at the forefront of my success. I believe in what I do and I love what I do. It never feels like work.

ginammarielogoHow do you give credit where credit is due?

I have been fortunate throughout my career to have an incredibly supportive family and a network of people who truly want me to succeed. They have been there by my side every step of the way. I feel incredibly blessed and know, without a doubt, I would not be where I am today if it were not for the many wonderful people in my life.

What is your number one priority?

My number one priority is my husband and four children and, then, my business.

When is breaking the rules okay?

Since I am a complete rule follower, I would probably say never!

What values are you committed to?

The values I am most committed to are integrity and character. The truth never changes. I believe that if you live your life in the truth and do your best to be honest and sincere, good things will come your way. This path may not always be the easiest but, when all is said and done, I can sleep well.

What do you do to live a balanced life?

In today’s world, living a balanced life does not come so easy. However, I can answer this question by saying my faith and family keep me balanced and remind me often of what is most important in life

Who has influenced you the most?

Without a doubt, my mother has been the biggest influencer and mentor in my life.

How do you spend most of your time?

With the expansion of our new facility, much of my time has been spent at our new skin center. However, I have been blessed to have my husband and children by my side. So, I can honestly say I have the best of both worlds – family and career.

What is your daily skin care ritual?

My daily skin care regimen is simple and effective. In the evening, I cleanse with Liquid Loofah Cleanser, which is pH-balanced and water-based. In the morning, I rinse with water. Both day and night I use Moisture Support - Herbal Hydrating Mist, a water-based, herbal blend to calm and moisturize, and Herbal E Oil, a highly refined oil to support the skin’s natural moisture system. I apply Nourish - Rejuvenation Crème, a water-based cream, in the mornings to increase vascular activity. In the evening, Nutrient Serum, infused with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, is used to increase vascular activity.

Crystal Clear: 5 Gems for Sensitive Skin

Millions of men and women have skin sensitivities that prevent them from wearing jewelry made from certain materials. While the type of metal the jewelry is made from is what typically results in unpleasant reactions for people with allergies, choosing pieces made with certain gemstones could actually help the skin, in some cases.

Gems and crystals have been prized for millennia – not only for their beauty, but also for their cleansing and healing properties. They are used to promote inner peace, soothe anxiety, protect against negative energy, and so much more. Today, they are even being used to cleanse and protect the skin. In fact, gem-infused creams and oils have become extremely popular among people who are looking to experience the incredible benefits of crystals.

The types of stones that are used in these beauty products are also typically good for use in jewelry for people with sensitive skin. While everyone is different, wearing pieces that are made from a hypoallergenic metal – like gold or sterling silver – and the stones listed below prevents reactions in most people with sensitive skin. Of course, this is not a substitute for medical advice, and if sensitive skin prevents various clients from wearing the jewelry they love, they should consult with a medical professional.

ROSE QUARTZ

Rose quartz is a light pink stone that is safe for even the most sensitive skin. In addition to its use in jewelry, this gemstone is even used to make rollers to massage the skin. When used on the face, the roller increases lymphatic fluid flow and reduces the appearance of puffiness and tiredness. It also has antiaging properties.

As a healing crystal, rose quartz is the stone of universal love. It is thought to open the heart to all types of love, including self-love, platonic love, unconditional love, and friendship. It also protects against environmental pollution and negativity and strengthens the heart and circulatory system. It is especially effective when worn on jewelry close to the heart, such as a long necklace or brooch.

AMETHYST

Amethyst is regarded as one of the most calming and relaxing gemstones and it is safe to wear against the skin. Its purple color has been prized for centuries and ancient peoples knew it as a “gem of fire.” In various points in history, its value rivaled that of diamonds. Today, it is the birthstone for February and is commonly used in all types of jewelry.

Powerful and protective, those who practice gemstone therapy say amethyst protects the wearer from all types of harm. It also relieves stress and dispels anxiety, anger, and fear. It activates spiritual awareness while calming and stimulating the mind and boosting motivation.

Amethyst brings inner peace and strength to the wearer. Since it promotes calmness, it can even improve skin quality by reducing the occurrence of stress-related anxiety.

DIAMOND

One of the most valuable and hardest stones in the world, diamonds have been worn as a sign of wealth for thousands of years. These hypoallergenic stones symbolize love, in the form of engagement rings and anniversary jewelry, and show off style as statement pieces. They are the birthstone for April and the 60th anniversary gemstone. Diamonds are a timeless luxury, appropriate for every situation.

Diamonds are a symbol of purity and, while just about everyone is familiar with the classic, clear, white stone, they can also be blue, pink, yellow, and even black. These gems bring clarity and love into partnerships and serve as a sign of commitment. They enhance the metaphysical powers of other crystals, so, if they are worn in jewelry with other stones, such as amethyst, the powers of the other gems become more powerful. Diamonds are said to clear mental and emotional pain and help bring about new beginnings. They also stimulate imagination and creativity and help bring clarity of mind.

PEARLS

The pearl is one of the most unique gemstones in the world, as it is the only one to form inside another living being. They occur as the result of irritation to the soft tissue inside of an oyster, and they have been prized for both their beauty and their healing properties since the dawn of time. They are widely used, especially in Asian cultures, where they are worn to promote good overall health and restore balance.

Whether naturally occurring or cultured, pearls have numerous healing properties in reiki. They help restore the body’s natural balance and promote inner wisdom. Pearls also promote sound sleep and are beneficial in the treatment of lung and heart disease. They are also effective in the treatment of skin conditions like acne and rosacea.

GARNET

Most often seen in red, garnet is a gemstone that also comes in a rainbow of colors, including: green, pink, orange, brown, black, and yellow. The birthstone for January and the second anniversary gemstone, garnets are commonly seen as a symbol of love and passion. Crushed garnets are safe for sensitive skin and, when crushed, can even be used as exfoliants in skin care products.
When worn, those practicing reiki say garnet re-energizes and cleanses the chakras. It balances energy and brings passion, or serenity, as appropriate. The stone is said to inspire devotion and love, alleviate emotional disharmony, and sharpen one’s perception of others and one’s self. Garnet is said to provide a boost to the entire system and revitalize the body, bringing confidence and emotional peace.

There are many gemstone beads that are safe for people with sensitive skin. The ones listed above, however, also have many metaphysical properties that are beneficial to the wearer. When recommending gemstone jewelry, help clients to avoid nickel and, instead, recommend hypoallergenic metals that are safe for people with sensitive skin.

Did you Know?

In areas of high heat, the skin’s sweat glands can produce up to three gallons of sweat per day, making good skin care habits especially essential, since sweat can cause oil and dirt to collect on the skin.

REAL RESULTS: The Proof is in the Pictures

Most people have heard the old adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Well, in this industry, it can also be worth that many dollars, or more. Aestheticians around the world chronicle the progression of clients’ skin conditions in many ways. But, one of the most effective ways to take success stories from word of mouth to tangible evidence is through before and after photos. Not only does this serve as legitimate proof of efficacy, but when executed ethically, it is also an effective marketing tool and often influences potential clients’ perspective positively. This can lead to new clients and increased retail sales.

Eminence Reaches Milestone in Philanthropic Efforts

Since 2012, Eminence has planted a tree for every retail product sold. The development of these Forest Gardens in rural communities empowers local people to restore their environment, grow their own food, and build a sustainable income and future their communities. Eminence is proud to contribute to the development of these Forest Garden Projects. A single tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year, while also providing a habitat for biodiversity and helping combat climate change.

In addition to the monthly “Publisher’s Note” authored by second-generation publisher Amanda Strunk Miller, articles are written by licensed aestheticians, medical doctors, injectors, chemists, naturopaths, and other skin care professionals. Mainstay sections like “Game Changers,” "Beauty Buzz,” and “Put It Into Practice” appear monthly and tackle the skin care industry’s trending topics and popular ingredients.

Other prevalent resources are found at DERMASCOPE.com and bring exclusive webinars, events, and community blogs to the forefront of the skin care industry. In June 2020, an interactive “Ask the Experts” online forum launched where readers can now connect with skin care, wellness, beauty, hair removal, business, and body care experts. Also on the website are exclusive videos, articles, collaborative communities, product guides, and more. And in January 2021, DERMASCOPE debuted its first professional podcast, "The Aesthetic Report," where host Michelle D'Allaird-Brenner interviews the industry's brightest minds and offers listeners practical advice for immediate implementation in their businesses. Professionals can listen wherever they get their podcasts.

DERMASCOPE publishes 13 issues annually for readers in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Its weekly electronic newsletter is delivered to more than 50,000 subscribers and includes exclusives, industry trends, and spa humor.
