"I use primarily hard wax except for large areas like legs and backs. I've been licensed for about five years and when I was in school we never even learned bikini waxing with strip wax. It was hard wax from the beginning for me." ~ Linda Andrews "We were taught to wax the bikini area with hard wax and other areas with soft wax. I personally do not like having my own bikini waxed with soft wax because it causes more ingrown hairs and irritation, while I have a very small number of clients who do like soft wax being used for their bikini area." ~ Tiffany Bowen "I love hard wax on smaller areas like the face, underarms, and bikini. I think strip wax is better for larger areas… I bought the blue Berins wax and use it at home and I absolutely love it. You get more precision, it removes shorter hairs, and it is way less painful. It's funny though, a lot of local salons have never even heard of the hard wax and use the strip wax for everything. Most of my friends who get waxed have also never experienced the hard wax. I told them all to request it when they are making their next appointments because for those areas, I really feel it is a more thorough and way less painful experience. We use hard wax at my school and after experiencing both, I won't use strip wax on those areas." ~ Rachel Pontillo "When I was in school they only taught us soft wax for all areas, fortunately I came from an area that did a lot of Brazilian waxing so I was quickly taught how to use hard wax by a co-worker. I now never use soft wax on any delicate area (bikini, face, underarms) and I have so many loyal waxing clients because they say it doesn't hurt like the other places that use soft wax. I prefer Cirepil blue also it really is easy to use. It does cost more but it is well worth it." ~ Nanette Johansen "They both serve their purpose... the secret... purchase quality wax, and use impeccable techniques! You can not go wrong when you perfect what you are doing!" ~ Michelle D'Allaird "At my school, we were only taught with strip wax. I understand the uses for hard wax and have tried it, but most people hate the feeling of lifting the edge before pulling. I use Amber wax and I've tried a few different varieties, without much luck. I know hard wax is supposed to be great for Brazilian waxing but I really have a hard time with that. On the areas where the hair comes straight out, I find it easier if I use soft wax and a strip." ~ Gianine Gesler "Us veterans only read about hot wax from our text book had no experience using it in our cosmetology school. Now like with everything else there are so many different waxes to choose from; one has to try them all to figure out which one they like the most. Aestheticians who work for other people will have to invest in themselves." ~ Leslie Keib "I'm still a student, and I'm loving every minute of it… can't wait to get out in the field. Here in Texas we are taught with both the hard and strip wax... just as the majority of you said, I find hard wax easier and less painful on the bikini, underarms and other smaller areas. I believe the strip wax is used on larger areas because you use less product." ~ Elizabeth Brasher Want to read more? Subscribe to one of our monthly plans to continue reading this article.
