Hair Products Can Cause Acne

Written by   Cynthia Malcom Taylor

Do hair sprays, conditioners, and other hair styling products clog pores, resulting in acne breakouts? The answer is a resounding YES. If tiny bumps are seen along the hairline on the upper part of the forehead, this may be an example of clogged pores.

Products can cause whiteheads and other types of acne in these areas. The bumps can be so subtle that the client feels them, but the bumps cannot be seen with the naked eye. Some clients have bumps that multiply and become closely packed bumps, known as acne cosmetica (acne caused by products applied to the skin or hair). But why do some haircare products cause breakouts? When haircare products contain oil, the oil can find its way to the skin. Once this happens, the pore clogging oils will do just that. Clogged pores are a breeding ground for acne growth.

INGREDIENTS

There are a host of ingredients that are risky for acne-prone skin. Many hair products are oil-based, which may clog pores and trigger acne in clients who have the genetic predisposition that causes the pore to clog. Ingredients such as petroleum, silicone, cocoa butter, sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, mineral oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, and lanolin can also trigger acne, especially if left on the skin. Many hairsprays are also alcohol-based and can trigger breakouts if accidentally sprayed onto nearby skin. It can trap in oil and bacteria, creating a great environment for acne to grow. Products containing organic extracts will be a better choice for hair and skin. There are many ingredients that are great for hair but not great for the skin. Before a skin care professional encourages the client to discard an item, discuss managing the use of the product so that it does not encounter the skin. Many of those acne-causing ingredients are wonderful for hair and help condition and smooth dry or damaged hair follicles.

RESOLVING ACNE COSMETICA

During the consultation discuss all products the client is using, the sequence of use, and where they are being used on the body.

Be certain to cover haircare products, sprays, aerosols, so forth. After reviewing the client’s breakout schedule and product use, some deduction can be used to rule out certain skin care products that do not harm the skin. Once the practitioner isolates the products causing harm, they should instruct the client to discontinue use or give them restrictions for the product.

Drew Coleman: DMK Family Man

THE BEGINNING

I have always had a strong work ethic. As a kid, my first job was a paper route from when I was eight to 13 years-old. My passion for work continued in high school and through graduate school. I enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done and being able to support myself while helping others achieve their goals.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, it never occurred to me that I would move to California and become a part of the skin care industry, yet fate would have other plans. From childhood, I have always looked up to my uncle, Danné Montague-King, because he has always been his own unique man. He regularly reminds me of a family ski trip we went on when I was 13; I got lost in a snowstorm and the ski-patrol and sheriff’s department were all looking for me. I ended up being picked up by a snowplow a mile down the highway. We still laugh about it to this day. I think of it as his first memory of me as a young man charting my own path.

I respect the fact that he has dedicated his life to helping others, and his dedication motivates me; it is an honor to partner with someone I admire. He is the only person to be on the cover of DERMASCOPE magazine twice. He created and sold BioFreeze, which is an excellent example of entrepreneurship, creativity, and hard work. In 2001, I moved to southern California and started working in the DMK warehouse while attending university.

At first, I knew very little about skin care, but as I would fulfill orders and mix batches of the professional formulations and home prescriptives, I would get to know the raw materials and formulas over time. I also studied the training manuals, and this is when I first discovered the DMK Concept: Remove, Rebuild, Protect & Maintain. The DMK Concept is the guiding principles for sustainable skin revision. Regardless of the skin condition that is observed, the DMK skin care professional can follow the concept that Danné pioneered back in the early 1970s.

My first experience with the DMK family was while I was studying in Europe; Danné connected me with the distributors in Finland, Russia, and the United Kingdom. I will never forget their kindness and how they treated me like family. Education comes from experience, and the time spent with each distributor had a lasting impact on how important our global DMK family continues to be.

After three years at DMK, I needed to prove to myself that I could build my own life. I was recruited into the banking industry, and I worked there for 10 years. This experience has proven invaluable. While working full-time, I put myself through night school and earned a master’s degree in business administration. I continued to follow the skin care industry very closely and would even consult Danné during those years. Not only did I build my own career, but I was lucky enough to work with entrepreneurs from several respected industries. From doctors and lawyers to manufacturers and distributors, I gained first-hand knowledge of working with diverse clients and industries.

Talking Technology: Creating Profit-Driven Express Spa Services

As COVID-19 continues to impact the industry, spa professionals are hustling to find exciting new strategies to capture lost service revenue. Clients want to continue to treat themselves with cost-effective spa treatments and products.

Spa professionals have quickly realized these expedited services are optimal profit-drivers that allow for more appointments without extensive time restraints. Understanding Iontophoresis

Electric current in a treatment room can provide many effective benefits to the client. It often goes un-utilized during skin care treatments, especially for new aestheticians. This is usually due to inexperience, fear, or lack of knowledge, but once perfected, it can be an amazing addition to skin care treatments.

Building Up The Books: Utilizing Confidence to Create Loyal Clients

Confidence in and out of the treatment room is important. Skin care professionals need to be skilled in their craft. They need to know about skin types, products, and ingredients, but after all the technical skills are mastered, skin care professionals need to remember that they are in control of the treatment room. The confidence should exude from within, and that is what keeps clients coming back for more.

Organizer Adviser: Taking Control of the Treatment Room

Nobody likes a cluttered and unorganized workstation, especially clients. Although everything inside of a spa may be clean, the clutter and lack of organization alludes to an unkept and unsanitary treatment room. Not only does having an unorganized spa or treatment room make clients feel uncomfortable, but it also reflects poorly on the skin care professional. This is not appealing to clients, especially when they are trying to destress and relax. There is nothing soothing about a tower of dirty bowls in the sink. The client’s experience is everything. It can truly make or break a skin professional’s business.

DMK – Danné Montague-King Co. Muscle Banding Facial

Muscle Banding Facial

Muscle banding is a term Danné Montague-King came up with in the 1970s when he was researching how to strengthen facial muscles through isometric exercise response. He was looking for a better option that did not require a tedious 45-minute daily exercise to target all 57 muscles of the face and neck.

He discovered holding the vertical, horizontal, and lateral muscles in stasis for approximately 45 minutes three to four times a month with professionally applied enzymatic-based treatments, predictably, helped build muscle tissue that is maintainable for extended periods of time.

While results varied from client to client over the years, at time the results were so dramatic that even plastic surgeons were stunned. Many medical professionals accused Montague-King of airbrushing or Photoshopping the after photos in clinical trials. This continued until they tried to treatments themselves. While visiting Montague-King at his Beverly Hills spa, one prominent surgeon from New Zealand was skeptical, at which point Montague-King insisted he try an enzymatic treatment. Afterward the good doctor looked in the mirror and explained, “I always thought skin and muscles have DNA memory, and this proves it. We are putting these treatments into my practice as soon as possible.”

When the enzyme mask solution is applied along the line of muscle from point of insertion to point of extension, motor neurons start firing along the muscle fibers in an asynchronous motion. The more neurons fired, the stronger the muscle fibers become.

During the slightly confining 45-minute duration, the client feels pseudo-heat sinking into the skin. These thermogenic effects deepen the action and starts capillary dilation, which can not only flush clogged capillaries, which can appear to be broken, but also sets reverse osmosis into action. This whisks toxins and other effluvia from the site of skin cells, leaving behind a nice, clean matrix. A subtle pulsing will also be felt – it is the rest phase between the pulses that build the cells in the muscle.

Banding comes from applying strong bands of enzymatic material to clients whose skin is just starting to sag in certain areas, including nasal labial, mandibles, underjaw areas, so forth. A full-face application is recommended for seniors aging all over the face and neck.

Moving on From Melasma: Hyperpigmentation & Differentiation

Healthy, normal skin has an even skin tone and is free of dark areas caused by excess melanin (hyperpigmentation) or light spots void of melanin (hypopigmentation). The variance in pigmentation does not cause any physical or imminent harm but can make people feel self-conscious about their appearance.

Simply put, hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that causes discolored or dark spots anywhere on the skin. Compared to the rest of the complexion, hyperpigmented areas appear deeper in color and stand out visually.
