Gluten-Allergy Sufferers Celiac is an autoimmune disorder that entails one’s immune system attacking their intestinal tract when gluten is consumed. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley and rye. Statistics show that celiac affects one percent of all Americans although some experts maintain that this rate could be as much as 30 percent. Diagnosis “is” on the rise. Untreated and undiagnosed, celiac can lead to severe immune system disorders, chronic rashes, infertility, osteoporosis, and even cancer. Gluten can also be found in cosmetics and skin care products. While most medical “experts” will say that gluten is only offensive when ingested many believe in the adage that “what goes on, goes in.” Regardless, even the experts agree that those with celiac should exhibit caution when applying products containing gluten near their mouth.
