The “Fab Five” Super Foods

Written by

Take a fresh approach to eating right with the "fab five" of super foods. Each is packed with nutrition and flavor to jumpstart any meal. Super foods are excellent sources for the vitamins, minerals, fats, and fatty acids the body needs. These "fab five" foods provide even more of a nutritional boost and are easily incorporated into meals.

  • Walnuts – Taste great and they are a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.

  • Flaxseed – Over 50 percent of the fat in flaxseed is omega-3 fatty acid. They have been shown to prevent or reduce the symptoms of arthritis, colitis, cancer, heart disease, and even acne.

  • Pomegranates – Rich in antioxidants. Among other benefits, the fruit is listed as a source of folic acid, potassium, niacin, vitamin C, iron, calcium, and a rich source of fiber.

  • Salmon – A good source of easily digestible proteins; fatty acids; vitamins D, A, and some B vitamins; and minerals like selenium, zinc, phosphorus, calcium, and iron.

  • Dark greens – Calorie for calorie, they are perhaps the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food. A rich source of minerals and vitamins; greens are spectacular when quickly heated in a skillet with a little olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice.

"Taking a fresh approach to any meal means choosing healthy foods in the right portions," says Doug Taeckens, president and CEO of Healthy Steps by Jokari, "Working these five power-packed foods into a weekly diet will help your body get the proper nutrition it needs to function at maximum capacity."
