During the summer months, skin can become dry from too much sun or ironically from spending too much time in the water. In addition, due to the summer heat from its scorching temperatures, too much perspiration can also cause the skin to be oily. A great way to restore balance to the skin is by applying an herbal face mask.
Herbal Face Mask Add a tablespoon or so of an herbal infusion. This infusion should contain herbs that are good for cleansing, soothing and softening of the skin, such as chamomile, sage leaf or yarrow.
This medicinal herb has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and moisturizing properties. In Greek mythology, the hero Achilles used yarrow to prevent his soldiers' wounds from bleeding. It is a good source of tannins and flavonoids and can be found in hedges bordered by woodland trails, fields and meadows in Europe, North America and Western Asia. Yarrow is a member of the aster family and has traditionally been used to treat rosacea, improve blood circulation and reduce skin inflammation.
An herbal infusion is basically a strong brewed herbal tea. To make one for either a natural skin and/or hair care recipe, simply pour boiling water over the herbs you choose to use, one pint of water per one ounce of herb, steeping (covered) for about 15 to 30 minutes. Once the allotted time has past, strain the tea.
The month of July is National Blueberry Month. Why should this little blue fruit have a whole month designated to celebrating its goodness? When considering the benefits of this super fruit in skin care, its active antioxidant properties and nutritional benefits offer a visible difference. Phytonutrients stabilize the collagen matrix while preventing free radical damage which combats the signs of aging and helps to smooth and firm the skin. Vitamin C is important for building and maintaining that collagen matrix which is key to the skin's youthful appearance and glow. Incorporating this super fruit into your diet and the skin care products you use is bound to offer a double whammy antioxidant effect, from the inside out.
Memory exercises performed for just 12 minutes a day for 8 consecutive weeks have proven to keep the brain sharp and can reverse memory loss in those at risk for developing alzheimers. The memory exercise called Kirtan Kriya has been researched and tested, and has proven to be beneficial to the people at risk, as well as their caregivers. According to Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, medical director of the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation, Kirtan Kriya (pronounced "Keertun Kreea"), is a type of meditation derived from the Kundalini yoga tradition, which has been practiced for thousands of years.
What do you get when you add heat, humidity and air pollution together? Simple … the perfect recipe for summer allergies. One of the physical triggers from summer allergies is dry-itchy eyes. Typically, eye allergies result when they are exposed to the actual offending allergen, such as pollen, ragweed, even air pollution. As a defense mechanism, particular cells in your eyes, mast cells, release histamine and other chemicals which cause inflammation … resulting in itchy, red, watery allergic eyes.

Nouveau Contour USA utilizes their years of experience in the permanent makeup industry to provide post-surgical cleft lip patients with more natural looking lips in order to regain their self-confidence. Trained technicians can create a natural looking lip for post-surgical cleft lip patients by blending complementary lip colors to camouflage scars.
As a large shrub or small tree, the hibiscus plant produces huge, colorful, trumpet-shaped flowers that captivate us by their beauty and are also known for their ability to attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. However, it is extremely popular as tea and food due to its health benefits. So, it should not be surprising that this gorgeous plant can be used in skin care treatments.
What customers value most changes constantly, and the pace of change has increased exponentially with the economic recession. The businesses who become relevant by addressing what customers really value at any given time will be the first ones out of the recession. One year ago, people were looking for financial stability in companies they were purchasing from because of all of the business closings. Now, on-time delivery outranks that because so many businesses cut back their inventory during the worst of the recession. With demand increasing, customers have more difficulty getting what they want on time.
As the summer sun begins to sizzle, skin often pays the price. To protect the masses heading outside to enjoy the sun, I offer the following insight to address the five most common sunshine related skin care issues.
Hyperpigmentation and Redness: Pigmentation will always be worse during the summer months because the sun triggers the production of melanin. Heat also triggers inflammation which increases melanin activity resulting in hyperpigmentation. To counteract these conditions, I recommend: Exfoliate skin regularly: A mild acid peel helps to break up and remove pigmented cells, as well as draw excess oil out of the pores to leave the skin less shiny.
How does one satisfy a sweet craving? One healthy alternative to refined sugar is eating dried fruits as a snack. With the new craze of being health conscious and aware of what you are eating, fruit has become a hot topic among nutritionist and many doctors. Eating fruit in moderation is a great way to get needed nutrients and vitamins. Dried fruit is a quick and tasty way to get those same benefits during a busy, fast-paced day. Not all dried fruit is equal. Fruits naturally contain high levels of sugar, however many fruits that are dried fruits have additional sugar added to them for extra flavor – making them more like candy than an actual healthy snack.
Avery high percentage of the female population reports being affected by cellulite. Although exercise and a balanced diet are clinically proven to help maintain a healthy weight, these can only do so much to prevent this stubborn issue which affects women of all shapes and sizes. Within this short article, Dr. Ranella Hirsch, board-certified dermatologist, explains the facts and figures about cellulite.
Q: What causes cellulite? A: Cellulite is a condition principally affecting women due to the herniation of fat through fibrous tissue and the dimpled appearance that can follow.
Q: Why does cellulite affect women more than men?
The ultimate summer fruit, watermelon, is not just a cool treat for the taste buds. It is also a sweet treat for skin when used as an ingredient. Why? Because watermelon extract is believed to have properties that allow it to protect skin cells against the daily stress caused by UV light and free radicals. In addition, watermelon extract can possibly also work towards accelerating new collagen production.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is encouraging Americans to take simple and affordable steps to test their homes for harmful levels of radon gas. Radon, a colorless odorless gas, is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon can seep into a home from underground and if left to accumulate, high levels of radon can cause lung cancer. Improving indoor air quality by increasing awareness of environmental health risks, such as radon gas, supports healthier homes and communities. Approximately 21,000 people die from radon related lung cancer each year in the U.S., yet elevated levels of this health hazard can be prevented through these simple steps:
Spinach With its low calories and high nutrients, spinach should definitely become a part of your diet. As pointed out in our March 2012 issue, within the Scope This article "Top 10 Superfoods That Provide Iron," this nutritious green is considered a nutrition superstar. Research supports this claim by showing that spinach aids in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, some cancers and cardiovascular disease.
Walnuts In our June 2011 issue, we mentioned walnuts as being one of the "Fab Five" superfoods. They were touted as not only having a great taste but to also be a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats; making them an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and famous for their high antioxidant activity.
This gentle, aromatic grass is a refreshing herb that has a hint of ginger and can be used in cooking, body care and cleaning products. Whether used fresh or dried, the essential oil cultivated from this herb has been a staple in aromatherapy for centuries.
Lemongrass Facial The astringent qualities of lemongrass make it a perfect face mask ingredient for normal to oily skin. Do not use it too often though, or it will actually stimulate your oil glands.
2 teaspoons lemongrass 1 teaspoon sage leaf, rubbed 1 teaspoon green clay powder 1 cup water 1 banana, mashed
Anti-aging is probably the most important global trend in the cosmetics and personal care market today. In response to the rapid growth of the anti-aging segment of the personal care market, Shin-Etsu Silicones of America (SESA: a U.S. subsidiary of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd., Japan), has recently premiered its KSP series of high performance hybrid spherical silicone powders (KSP-441/KSP-411) that contain a silicone core along with a silicone resin shell. Presented at the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) 2011 Technology Showcase, this unique hybrid combination achieves a superior "soft-focus" effect.
Driven by stronger sales and traffic levels and a more optimistic outlook for sales growth and the economy, the Professional Beauty Association's (PBA) three main tracking indexes for the salon/spa industry, which include the Salon & Spa Performance Index (SSPI), Current Situation Index, and Expectations Index, rose in the fourth quarter of 2011. Following three straight quarters of decline and having hit their lowest levels in two years in the third quarter of 2011, the positive results for fourth quarter 2011 are a welcome relief to the professional salon and spa industry.
Emotional stress and physical pain are among the invisible components of rosacea beyond its red-faced, conspicuous appearance, according to new patient surveys by the National Rosacea Society (NRS). The NRS has designated April as Rosacea Awareness Month to alert the public to the warning signs of this chronic and often life-disruptive facial disorder now estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans. "Emotional stress is not only a common rosacea trigger but is often the result of its symptoms, creating a tailspin for many patients," said Dr. John Wolf, chairman of dermatology at Baylor University.
In recent years, there has been increased confusion surrounding the use of retinol and whether or not it should be incorporated into topical skin care products. Much of this uncertainty is because people are unfamiliar with retinol and how it should be applied. Retinol is one of the main forms of vitamin A. It is an essential vitamin needed for new cell growth, and the health and maintenance of tissues and skin cells and plays an integral role in anti-aging skin care. While using retinol and other topical products is only part of an effective anti-aging routine.

The month of April is Rosacea Awareness Month. As a result, here are some tips from Dr. Michael Gold, on how to best care for this condition that affects over 14 million people.
Some skin diseases are more than skin deep. Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in the country, affecting as many as 7.5 million Americans. This non-contagious condition often appears on the skin as red, scaly patches that itch and bleed. Psoriasis frequently starts between the ages of 15 and 35, but can appear at any time. New research indicates that chronic inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis may actually cause HDL cholesterol to change its molecular composition and increase the risk of severe heart disease. It is my opinion that the reasons to treat psoriasis are more important now than ever.
Through extensive published research on the science of skin renewal, Dr. Moy has discovered that by actively repairing the DNA in a person's skin, not only will there be visible signs of aging, but they will also experience a renewal and protection of skin tone and texture while reducing the risk of skin cancer. Moy says, "DNA damage occurs with eating bad food, sun exposure, tanning beds and aging because we make less DNA repair enzymes as we get older."
Understanding the latest dietary guidelines and how they impact the skin is key to solving the puzzle of selecting foods that feed a clear complexion. What you eat not only goes straight to your hips, it is also mirrored in your complexion. Proper nutrition can have a major impact on the way your skin looks and feels. Current research suggests that processed foods and high-fat dairy products can exacerbate acne, promote inflammation and cloud a clear complexion. Other evidence indicates that foods high in protein and antioxidants (fruits and vegetables in particular) can have anti-aging effects.
Rich in vitamins A, D and E, sunflower is a noted softening emollient that can be found in many skin care products – especially lotions and creams. Additionally, the antioxidants found in its oil are powerful which helps prevent common signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines … particularly in the premature stages.
A recent study administered by the Graduate School of bio-resource and Bioenvironmental Sciences at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan determined that among the healthy benefits of brown seaweed, fucoidan extract (FE) also drastically improves the therapeutic efficacy and safety of disease treatments. While the study began to investigate the anti-tumor properties of FE in human cancer cells and further examine its functionality, the results were overwhelmingly optimistic that fucoidan has a positive effect on the entire human body.
Here are some common skin problems that pregnant women face and their solutions.
Oily Skin, Breakouts and Acne Hormones change and increase during pregnancy which can cause oil gland production to increase and cause oilier skin and breakouts. Changing up your skin care regime can help to control these breakouts. The key to successful skin is not to pick at any blemish which will help prevent scaring. Pregnancy Mask Also called melisma and chlosma, is an increase in skin pigmentation that causes the skin to get darker in areas of the face. Usually it appears on the forehead and cheeks.

Researchers have linked increased starch intake to a greater risk for breast cancer recurrence, according to research.1 "The results show that it's not just overall carbohydrates, but particularly starch," said Jennifer A. Emond, M.S., "Women who increased their starch intake over one year were at a much likelier risk for recurring." Researchers conducted a subset analysis of 2,651 women who participated in the Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) Dietary Intervention Trial, a plant-based intervention trial that enrolled about 3,088 survivors of breast cancer.
It takes time to become a recognised leader in retailing, but the slip down the ladder can happen rapidly. This really came home to me when Tiger Woods came to play golf in my home town of Perth recently. After 623 weeks as the best golfer in the world he has slipped rapidly to 56th in the world. The same can happen to retailers, often for different reasons, but the lessons can be just as hard to learn.
Lesson One: Keep To Your Values and Your Brand Strategy The last few years have been difficult for all businesses.
Dr. Joshua L. Fox suggests following the guidelines below for mole prevention and protection:
Lead by example. A recent French study found that parents who wore a t-shirt when exposed to the sun influenced their kids to do the same. As a result, the kids developed fewer new moles over the next year than the kids of parents who did not wear protective clothing while in the sun. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen (for UVA & UVB) with an SPF of at least 15, wearing a hat, avoiding peak sun hours (between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) and seeking shade are other sun-smart measures to follow yourself and instill in your child. Also be sure to encourage your child to protect his or her eyes with sunglasses, to prevent the development of eye problems such as cataracts later in life.
The Australian Aboriginal peoples have long recognized tea tree as multi-faceted healing oil, even though the rest of the world thought it was just a weed. Long used by tribesmen to cure infected wounds, reduce poisons in the system (especially those given by spider bites) tea tree was only recognized by Western cultures in the early 1900s. Melaleuca alternafolia (Tea Tree) is a small tree similar to cypress. It grows to about 20 feet and is now cultivated in plantations though its original home was in marshy areas.
Whether caused by sun damage, skin inflammation or aging, the origins of dark spots and uneven complexion lie deep within the skin. "Melanin is what gives skin its color and in excess can result in the appearance of dark spots and discoloration," explains Dr. Ranella Hirsch, board-certified dermatologist. "This can be the result of UV exposure or subsequent to inflammatory skin conditions such as acne. Dark spots affect many skin types and can be quite upsetting to those affected." In the following question and answer session, Hirsch explains the facts about uneven pigmentation and dark spots.
CDC releases the most comprehensive melanoma report in the U.S. to date More than 45,000 cases of melanoma occurred in 45 states and the District of Columbia each year during 2004 through 2006, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. Melanoma is the third most common skin cancer, but is more dangerous and more likely to cause death than any other skin cancer, causing 8,000 U.S. deaths and costing billions of dollars each year.
Positive top-line results from a Phase 2b trial that evaluated the efficacy and safety of CD07805/47, a proprietary topical gel under investigation for treating patients with moderate to severe facial erythema (redness) of rosacea, from Galderma Pharma S.A.1 Rosacea is a chronic dermatological condition of the face and eyes characterized by persistent redness, flushing, inflammatory lesions and visible blood vessels that affects at least 16 million Americans.2 "Currently, there are no medical therapies with FDA approval to treat the persistent facial redness of rosacea," said Joseph F. Fowler, M.D., Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Louisville and a principal study investigator.
Over the last few months I have been working with clients in 11 countries. All of them have had economic difficulties. Some retailers are looking at the state of the economy and complaining about lost sales whilst others are looking at the same economy and seeing business opportunities. Some of these retailers are in the same retail sector and it is interesting to see how attitude can make a difference, but apart from attitude there are other important points that create the point of difference.
Customer Service Is Not the Answer During my travels I've come across sales staff who were exceptionally good and others who were just interested in processing the client and sending them on their way.
Recommended Regimen: If you do have a breakout use a salicylic acid-based cleanser in the morning and evening (over cleansing will strip your skin of its protective layer and cause additional irritation and dryness). To minimize oil production and impurities use a benzyl peroxide during the day to kill bacteria.
Moisturize: Use a non-clogging oil-based moisturizer during the colder months. Intense indoor heat and cold temperatures can easily cause surface dryness and damage which prevents your skin from holding in water. A great hydrating agent such as hyaluronic acid will help seal in water within the underlying layers.
The use of oxygen therapies was once thought to be solely the domain of the medical community, curing a variety of ailments. As we learn more about how oxygen reacts on a cellular level, it becomes more apparent that the use of oxygenated therapies can also be beneficial for spas to help treat maladies such as injured skin, sore muscles and even to combat aging. When our skin is exposed to higher oxygen levels our cells receive the nutrients they need to produce, function and stay strong. As we age our oxygen levels decrease putting stress on our body's ability to deliver nutrients to our skin cells.
From the common cherry tree, Prunus avium, it is native to the temperate areas of eastern Europe and western Asia. The fruit from the cherry tree has been cultivated since as far back as 300 B.C. with a lineage that goes back even farther. Packed with flavor and a multitude of vitamins and minerals, the cherry is not only good for you internally but externally as well. From protecting your skin from free radicals to helping with discoloration, this fruit when utilized can be extremely beneficial in taking care of your skin.
Did you know that mint can be used to treat blackheads? Mix three mint leave with one cup of boiling water to create an astringent or toner to swipe over your face. This will soothe inflammation and help to shrink the pores, making blackheads slowly fade over time. For an added punch, add a bit of orange peel and one tablespoon of witch hazel to the mix.
A summer vacation often means fun in the sun and water, but it can also mean an increase in the chances of developing a dangerous mole. Most kids are born without moles, called "nevi" by dermatologists, but a recent Colorado study of 681 white children found that every beach vacation leads to a five percent increase in small moles on children's skin. "The development of new moles is of concern, because the higher the number, and the more irregular moles, the greater the risk for developing melanoma, the most dangerous of the skin cancers," says Dr. Josh Fox, founder and director of New York and New Jersey-based Advanced Dermatology P.C.
The month of November has been officially designated as National Healthy Skin Month; therefore Dr. Michael Gold offers tips on how to keep skin fresh, hydrated and healthy all year round. Face washing should be part of everyone's daily skin care regimen, Gold points out the correct way to ensure that your skin gets the proper cleansing it needs:
Many people think that ethnic skin poses the greatest challenge when it comes to skin treatment. In my practice, I advise clients on how to address their most common skin care issues, which include variations in the following categories: Pigmentation, pore size, skin thickness, oil production and hydration level. To better understand these variations, we must understand the biology of the "how" and "why" of ethnic skin care in order to responsibly counteract skin weaknesses and bolster skin strengths.
Hydrate Your Skin The main issue that many people experience specifically in the fall is dehydration of their skin. The skin adjusts itself to the humidity in the summer air and as a result, the indoor air causes the skin to feel stale. It is recommended to use a cream cleanser and a hydrating moisturizer.
Repair Sun Damage Your skin receives the majority of sun damage during the summer months, and while the sun's rays feel amazing, they can also damage your skin. For this, getting a facial with a glycolic peel and looking for products that contain vitamin C is recommended.
Although all of the benefits of chocolate as an ingredientin skin care products and treatments are still unclear, you can still enjoy the benefits of its skin softening properties.
In a double-blind study conducted in Germany, researchers gave 24 women, ages 18 to 35 about a half-cup of cocoa per day for 12 weeks. Half drank cocoa with 329 milligrams of antioxidants per portion, while the other half drank cocoa with only 27 milligrams of antioxidants per portion. After three months, skin improvements were only seen in the group that consumed the 329 mg portion. For this group of women, their skin was moister, smoother, and less scaly and red when exposed to ultraviolet light. The researchers think the flavonoids, which absorb UV light, help protect and increase blood flow to the skin, improving its appearance.
Health – Boost your energy and reduce stress in the fall by taking a vitamin B supplement. Additionally, fall is perfect for buying locally grown foods, since beauty starts from the inside out.
Skin – Pumpkin is packed with antioxidants (A, C and Zinc). Pumpkin puree can be used to make a rejuvenating mask to help your skin glow.

Consumption for skin care:
While probiotic-foods contain live bacteria, prebiotic foods feed the good bacteria already living in your digestive system. You can find prebiotics in foods such as asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, bananas, oatmeal, red wine, honey, maple syrup, and legumes. Eat prebiotic foods on their own or with probiotic foods to perhaps give the probiotics a boost.
Despite the sluggish economy, e-commerce reported record sales last year with an anticipated double-digit growth in 2011. Fueled by new technology and an evolving social-media shopping sphere, commerce is almost unrecognizable to the common consumer. However, it spells good news for retailers who quickly adopt such changing sales and marketing strategies. Here are six retailer trends that are changing the way consumers shop in 2011:
There is nothing more beautiful than an expectant mother and nothing more sacred than the new life of a child. A woman’s body goes through many changes during pregnancy and after the delivery, as does her mental and emotional state. Research has shown that massage lowers anxiety, decreases back pain, helps with leg pain, improves sleep and decreases stress. Incorporating stones significantly enhances a prenatal massage.
As beneficial as massage is during pregnancy there are many considerations to take into account when massaging manually or with stones. This article focuses on clarifying contraindications for prenatal stone massage.
It is most important to be aware that all contraindications that apply for manual massage also apply for stone massage.
It is imperative to keep the core temperature stable when working on an expectant mother. The hot stones are a great tool for relieving muscle problems and calming the mother-to-be. A full body hot stone massage is contraindicated. A full body massage would raise the core temperature significantly and put the baby at risk. However, spot treatments with the stones are recommended for problem areas in the low back and neck. To sustain a normal core temperature while working with the hot stones, place cold stones under the hands, under the occipital ridge, and on the feet. If you are unable to keep the cold stones on the feet, then wrap the feet with a cold rag.
Cold stones offer extraordinary therapeutic value. During the gestation period, many women feel warmer than usual, so the application of cold marble stones provides a welcomed relief. The cold marble stones are valuable in releasing muscle strain and tightness.
During manual prenatal massage placement, stones are quite beneficial. Place warm or cold marble stones under the trapezes muscles or under the gluteus muscles. Remember to always use a barrier for hot placement stones. If the stone is warm, then it can be placed with caution; but remember to check that it is not too warm to damage the client’s skin. Cool or cold marble stones can be placed directly on the skin with no adverse effects. Marble is a soft stone and has the tendency to absorb the heat and inflammation from the body.
A therapist should have training and a certificate from a qualified instructor on prenatal massage before offering massage for a pregnant client. There are quality seminars available from many experienced instructors.
It is a gratifying experience to massage an expectant mother through her pregnancy. To work with her weekly or monthly to help keep her stress level down, and to keep her muscles relaxed and loose as they support the added weight gain and postural changes. Regular massages through pregnancy help to prepare the muscles for the hard work they will do at the time of delivery. The therapist can then follow up with postnatal massage which will help the new mother relax and get back in shape.
Unless effectively controlled, rosacea can play havoc on job interactions and employment, according to a new survey by the National Rosacea Society (NRS) on the impact in the workplace of this red-faced, poorly understood disorder now estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans.
In the survey of 1,134 rosacea patients, 60 percent of all respondents and 88 percent of those reporting severe symptoms said the disorder had negatively affected their interactions with others in the workplace. Among those with severe symptoms, 51 percent said they had even missed work because of their condition.
“Because the signs and symptoms appear on the most visible part of the body, rosacea is much more difficult to ignore than many other conditions,” said Dr. Boni Elewski, professor of dermatology at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. “Beyond physical discomfort, such as facial burning and stinging or eye irritation, the effect of rosacea on personal appearance can be emotionally and socially debilitating.”
In the new survey, 69 percent of all respondents and 87 percent of those with severe symptoms said they had noticed others staring at their face when they were experiencing a rosacea flare-up. Forty-five percent of all respondents, including 66 percent of those with severe symptoms, had also heard rude or inappropriate comments in the workplace about their facial appearance.
Moreover, many of the patients reported that rosacea had inflicted direct damage to their careers. Nineteen percent of all respondents and 39 percent of those with severe symptoms felt they did not receive a job offer because of their condition. In addition, 19 percent of all respondents and 41 percent of those with severe symptoms believed they were denied a promotion or new responsibilities because of the way they looked. Of the survey respondents who were affected by rosacea in the workplace, 78 percent said effective medical treatment had improved their professional interactions with others. Once thought to be a weed only suitable as feed for livestock, oats have been proven valuable as both a food and skin care ingredient. Evidence shows that oats were in Northern Europe as early as the Bronze Age and made their journey to North America in 1602 with an English explorer. The genus name Avena means nourishing while Sativa means cultivated.
Packed full of nutrients, all parts of the plant are used; grain, straw, and seed. Oats provide the best amino acid balance of all grains; a high lipid content to retain moisture; minerals for stronger skin, hair, and nails; plus an assortment of B vitamins to reduce stress and anxiety. Furthermore, in 1995, the Quaker Oats brand petitioned the FDA and was granted permission for the first heart health claim related to a specific food.
Oats have more water soluble fiber than other grains forming a thick mucilaginous gel which absorbs and moves excess sugars and fats through the body. By slowing the absorption of glucose in the blood and moving cholesterol out of the body, it helps to stabilize blood glucose levels and lower cholesterol for a healthier heart and body.
The anti-inflammatory property of oats is due to its high lipid content that softens and heals dry, itchy skin. Both oat grain and oat straw are used in shampoos, moisturizers, cleansing bars, and dusting powders.
According to Jerry Whittemore, former VP at Jason cosmetics, with a doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry, oats have two major accomplishments:
Whittemore says, “The FDA Human Monographs are very important to our personal care industry because they allow marketers to market actual, real drugs (ie: acne therapy drugs) without expensive premarket approval.”
Oat Straw is the grass and leaf portion of the plant commonly used as a tea or bath soak. Containing properties of the whole grain it is also used as a nerve tonic for the release of stress, exhaustion, and even depression.
Wild Oats (Bach Flower Essence) captures the “energy vibration” of the plant. It may be used orally, on pulse points, in sprays, and in baths. Wild oats is used to alleviate depression, open the intuitive channel, think outside the box, adapt and have the flexibility to change as needed.
Now that you are in the know… you may eat, drink, and be merry with the many virtues of oats.
Today’s expanding knowledge of the many potential signs and symptoms of rosacea can help unmask this widespread but poorly understood facial disorder now estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans. “It has been called ‘The Great Imposter’ because people often confuse rosacea with other conditions, such as a sunburn or acne, or even eye irritation, and fail to seek medical help,” said Dr. Jonathan Wilkin, chairman of the National Rosacea Society (NRS) medical advisory board. “People need to be more aware of this highly prevalent disorder, and the need for treatment and lifestyle changes before it becomes progressively severe.”
The incidence of rosacea is now rapidly growing as the populous baby boom generation passes through the most frequent ages of onset – between 30 and 60. Yet, surveys have found that the public has little knowledge of this chronic but treatable disorder, including how to recognize it and what to do about it.
Among the most famous rosacea sufferers is former President Bill Clinton, whose doctors disclosed that he has this condition in The New York Times. Others reported to have suffered from the disorder include comedian W.C. fields, Princess Diana, financier J.P. Morgan, and the Dutch painter Rembrandt.
Characterized by relapse and remissions, rosacea typically begins as a redness or flushing on the cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead that may come and go. Over time, the redness becomes ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear.
This condition, known as subtype 1 rosacea, often occurs before or at the same time as subtype 2 rosacea, which includes facial redness with bumps and pimples if left untreated. In severe cases the skin may become swollen and bumpy, especially around the nose – a condition known as subtype 3 rosacea, or rhinophyma.
In many rosacea sufferers, the eyes are also affected, feeling irritated and appearing watery or bloodshot. Without proper care, this condition, known as subtype 4 or ocular rosacea, can lead to further irritation and, in severe cases, reduction of vision.
In a new survey of 1,289 rosacea patients conducted by the NRS, 71 percent of the respondents said they had experienced persistent redness, and 63 percent said they had suffered from frequent flushing. In addition, 63 percent said they had suffered outbreaks of pimples (pustules) and 61 percent reported experiencing bumps (papules).
Sixty-one percent of the patients said they had also experienced eye symptoms, and visible blood vessels were cited by 56 percent. Other widely reported signs and symptoms included facial burning or stinging, reported by 51 percent; facial itching, experienced by 41 percent; dry appearance, named by 40 percent; raised red patches, reported by 30 percent; skin thickening or excess tissue on the nose, 22 percent; signs beyond the face, 21 percent; and facial swelling, 18 percent.
“Although the subtypes of rosacea represent common patterns, the manifestations of rosacea can vary substantially from one patient to another, and medical therapy must therefore be tailored for each individual case,” Wilkin said. “With greater knowledge of its potential signs and symptoms, physicians should be able to achieve significant improvements in the diagnosis and management of this chronic and often life-disruptive disorder.”
Perhaps even more devastating than its physical effects, rosacea often inflicts significant emotional and social damage on the lives of its victims because of its impact on personal appearance. In recent surveys by the NRS, nearly 76 percent of rosacea patients said this unsightly disorder had lowered their self-confidence and self-esteem, and 41 percent reported it had caused the to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements.
Adding to the embarrassment is a common myth that rosacea sufferers, who often have a red face and nose, are heavy drinkers. In fact, while alcohol may aggravate the disorder, the symptoms can be just as severe in a nondrinker.
Another common misconception is that rosacea is caused by poor hygiene, while in reality it is unrelated to personal cleanliness.
Although the cause of rosacea is unknown, a vast array of lifestyle and environmental factors can trigger flare-ups of signs and symptoms in various rosacea sufferers. Common rosacea triggers include sun exposure, emotional stress, hot or cold weather, wind, heavy exercise, alcohol, spicy foods, heated beverages, humidity, certain skin-care products, and many others.
“The good news is that rosacea can be effectively controlled with medical therapy and lifestyle changes to avoid factors that aggravate the condition in individual cases,” Wilkin said. Individuals with any of the following warning signs of rosacea are urged to see a dermatologist for diagnosis and appropriate care:

It is official - guys are slathering on anti-aging lotions, potions, and serums in pursuit of turning back the hands of time. Prior to 2005, facial anti-agers aimed at men were not trendy. But by 2007, crease-fighters accounted for 20 percent of the estimated 46 million in male skin care sales. Consumer spending shows that men are using products that enhance personal appearance, including anti-aging serums and lotions. With so many choices available what is a man to do? Here are a few tips from Gerald Imber, M.D.
Sleep Deprivation: A good night’s sleep improves the overall texture of the skin and results in a fresh glow. However, a large majority of men do not get enough sleep, depriving the skin of the self-renewal process which reverses the effects of daily life and stress. Sleep deprivation can lead to the formation of dark circles, wrinkles, puffy eye bags, and fine lines.
Treatments: Green tea bags that have been steamed and cooled in the refrigerator or freezer can be applied to the eye area to decrease puffiness with natural caffeine components. Green tea is also known for its antioxidant benefits and will neutralize free radical damage.
Aging Skin: Men have fewer fine facial wrinkles thanks to thicker skin and hair follicles, and daily exfoliation by shaving, but men still need repair. Everybody gets sun damage. Everybody loses skin elasticity.
Treatments: Everybody... men and women should be using antioxidants every day. In addition, applying a moisturizer and sun block are also essential to prevent aging and maintain healthy looking skin.
Nearly 10 years ago, the FDA approved the anti-depressant prescription drug Zoloft for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and one expert believes that is 10 years too long, especially when natural alternatives have been proven to reduce PMS symptoms without drugs.
“It seems almost alien to me why someone would take a drug to relieve PMS when the drug’s list of potential side effects – drowsiness, nausea, headache, loss of appetite, anxiety, panic attacks, hostility, aggressiveness, restlessness, and depression – are almost an identical match for the symptoms of the ailment they’re trying to relieve,” said Michael Mooney, director of re-search and education at SuperNutrition Life Extension Research.
“There is a solid base of research that has shown that women can reduce PMS without taking a prescription drug. In fact, there are six simple, safe nutrients the body uses all the time that have been shown to reduce PMS discomfort – but they need to be taken in adequate potencies. These nutrients don’t have a list of side effects that sound worse than the PMS itself.”
Mooney cited six natural nutrients that have been shown to relieve PMS:
“The effects of these nutrients start the first month and generally reach maximum PMS reduction levels by month three,” Mooney added. “Women deserve to share the fruits of modern nutritional science and be informed that they can reduce their PMS discomfort without relying on drugs with all their dangerous side effects, but instead, by using nutrients that are natural to the body in the proven effective potencies.”
Imagine yourself in a field of lavender flowers as you spread this blend on your carpet. It will absorb odors and dirt and impart a lovely scent as you vacuum it up.
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Sprinkle over carpet. Let sit overnight; vacuum up in the morning.
Important: Whenever you create a homemade cleaning product, you should test it in an inconspicuous spot before using it, to make sure it will not stain, fade, or otherwise affect your carpet, upholstery, woodwork, wallpaper, et cetera.

Cosmetology and aesthetics students at the International Academy of Hair Design in Tempe, Ariz. are helping to bring hope to cancer patients through the outreach of Face in the Mirror, a 501c3 non-profit organization.
Aesthetics students attend the Face in the Mirror monthly “In Celebration of Life” teas, which are given at St. Joseph and Banner Good Samaritan Medical Centers. The students help assist in the free pampering and facial makeovers at the event. Complimentary maintenance of wigs has also been offered by the school to the organization, for the benefit of the patients.
“As educators of future cosmetologists and aestheticians we understand the significance of the psychological importance of healing and looking as good as possible – even when battling the after effects of cancer, chemotherapy, and radiation,” said Jessica Wolman, one of the owners of the Tempe cosmetology and aesthetics school.
Face in the Mirror was founded by Barbara MacLean in 2004 and is dedicated to the loving memory of her sister, Charlotte Mae McCracken who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2001.
For many teens and young adults, living in the moment is all about having fun, looking good, and not worrying about what tomorrow brings. But for young people who use tanning beds in their quest for that popular bronze look, this unhealthy behavior can result in an increased risk of skin cancer and premature aging, such as wrinkles. A new survey by the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) found that Caucasian teen girls and young women who tan indoors do so for the sake of vanity despite knowing the health risks.
A vast majority (86 percent) of respondents who tan indoors knew that using tanning beds can cause skin cancer – yet they still reported using an indoor tanning bed in the last year. When asked if they think people look more attractive with a tan, a large percentage of respondents (66 percent) answered yes, especially indoor tanners (87 percent).
“It’s absurd that many people who indoor tan are doing it for cosmetic reasons because that tan can actually accelerate the aging process and can lead to melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer,” said dermatologist Ronald L. Moy, M.D., FAAD, president of the Academy. “Teens often report feeling a sense of invincibility, which explains why their actions often do not mirror their knowledge of certain behaviors – like tanning.”
Ironically, despite the fact that ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds can lead to developing wrinkles sooner in life, indoor tanners were more concerned about wrinkles than their non-indoor tanning peers (42 percent vs. 28 percent, respectively). Alarmingly, nearly one-half of respondents who have indoor tanned in the past year (48 percent) knew someone who has or has had skin cancer.
“Our survey confirms that teens are more concerned with their current looks than their future health, even though they realize that skin cancer is a risk factor of their behavior,” said Moy. “If this behavior trend continues and young women’s attitudes toward tanning do not change, future generations will develop more skin cancers earlier in life and the consequences can be fatal.”

About the “2011 Indoor Tanning: Teen and Young Adult Women” Survey:
More than 3,800 white, non-Hispanic females ages 14 to 22 responded to a nationwide survey online to determine their tanning knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. The survey was conducted by Relevant Research, Inc (formerly RH Research) of Chicago from December 28, 2010, to January 11, 2011. Data were weighted by age and region based on the US Census Current Population Survey (released in 2010).
Remarkably aromatic and delightfully sensuous, vanilla is an exotic spice that has been steeped in history, legend, science, and culinary enchantments since its discovery.
Vanilla was first cultivated by the Totonec people of Mexico. Then, in the 15th century, the Aztecs conquered the Totonec people and required tribute in the form of vanilla beans. Later, the Spanish conquistadors were indoctrinated into the joys of vanilla when they conquered the Aztecs; and they, in turn, introduced vanilla to Europe.
Vanilla beans are the long, greenish-yellow seedpods of the fragrant tropical vanilla orchid. Grown as a vine and hand-pollinated, vanilla orchids are harvested by hand and undergo a complicated curing process after a seven to eight month pollination. Only two species – Vanilla planifolia and Vanilla tahitensis (Tahitian vanilla) – are cultivated for commercial use as a flavoring or fragrance, and they are grown in Madagascar, Mexico; Indonesia; and Tahiti.
The Legend of Princess Xanat According to Totonac mythology, the vanilla orchid was born when a princess, forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. The lovers were captured and beheaded. Where their blood touched the ground, the strong vine and delicate orchid grew.
The aroma of vanilla is a sweet balsamic with calming, comforting, and balancing benefits.
When using high-quality Bourbon beans, crystals (often resembles a white fur) might be noticed after time, this is an indicator that the beans are high in natural vanillin and are of good quality; the formation of these crystals is a natural and delicious process.
How to Buy and Store Good Vanilla Beans
Premium quality vanilla beans have a rich, full aroma and are oily to the touch. They should be pliable enough to bend without breaking, and dark brown (almost black) in color.
Vanilla beans will keep indefinitely if stored properly in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, or if they are vacuum-packed. While it is important to keep vanilla beans cool to avoid mildew, they should not be refrigerated or frozen, as this causes them to harden and lose flavor.
If your vanilla beans have dried out, simply add them to warm liquid to draw out the flavor. A dry bean pod added to a mug of hot chocolate or a cup of hot tea results in a delicious experience.
Vanilla benefits skin care by tightening the pores and protecting against imperfections of the skin.
Health Benefits of Vanilla Essential Oil
The health benefits of vanilla essential oil can be attributed to its many virtuous properties, such as: Antioxidant, aphrodisiac, anti-carcinogenic, febrifuge, anti-depressant, sedative, tranquilizing, and relaxing.
The essential oil of vanilla is extracted by solvent extraction of a resinous substance obtained from fermented vanilla beans; from the vanilla plant with the scientific name ‘Vanilla Planifolia.’ Its main components are acetic acid, caproic acid, eugenol, furfural, isobutyric acid, and vanillin hydroxybenzaldehyde. Most of the flavors with a ‘vanilla’ tag on them are not derived from original vanilla at all; they are synthesized from hydrocarbons.
Apart from its widespread use as a flavoring agent in the food, beverages, and pharmaceutical industries, the essential oil of vanilla has also found its use in the world of medicine.

Gone are the days when waxing was a service just for women! The bliss® spa at the W Fort Lauderdale is responding to the trend of ‘manscaping’ by introducing the He-wax – a whole new waxing menu for ‘body-hair conscious’ men, which promises smooth skin from head-to-toe (and everywhere in between).
Bliss® spa understands that grooming puts a little pep in their male client’s step, but not just any waxing product will suffice for their sensitive side. As a result, bliss® has introduced He-Wax – a far superior method of hair removal to shaving because it quickly pulls the hair out by the root rather than cutting it bluntly like shaving which leads to no stubble and slower, softer re-growth.

Despite repeated warnings from dermatologists on the health dangers of tanning, results of a new survey by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) confirmed that a large percentage of Caucasian teen girls and young women admitted using tanning beds or intentionally tanning outdoors in the past year.
Thirty-two percent of respondents had used a tanning bed in the past year, and of those respondents, one-fourth (25 percent) used a tanning bed at least weekly, on average. An overwhelming majority (81 percent) of all respondents reported that they had tanned outdoors either frequently or occasionally in the past year.
“Our survey underscores the importance of educating young women about the very real risks of tanning, as melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – is increasing faster in females 15 to 29 years old than in males of the same age group,” said dermatologist Ronald L. Moy, M.D., FAAD, president of the AAD. “In fact, most young women with melanoma are developing it on their torso, which may be the result of high-risk tanning behaviors such as indoor tanning. In my practice, I have had patients – young women with a history using tanning beds – who have died from melanoma.”
Despite claims by the tanning industry to the contrary, indoor tanning is so dangerous that the United States Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer panel have declared ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and artificial light sources – such as tanning beds and sun lamps – as a known carcinogen. Studies show indoor tanning increases a person’s risk of melanoma by 75 percent.
When survey results were analyzed by age, significant differences were noted by respondents who reported using indoor tanning. Specifically, 18 to 22 year olds were almost twice as likely to have indoor tanned (40 percent) when compared to 14 to 17 year olds (22 percent).
Although spray tans are considered a safe alternative to UV exposure from the sun and indoor tanning beds, the majority of respondents (86 percent) indicated that they never received a spray tan in the past year.
“Exposure to UV radiation is the leading risk factor for skin cancer, yet – despite this knowledge – droves of teens and young women are flocking to tanning bed facilities and beaches or pools to tan every year,” said Moy. “The challenge is that teens have access to indoor tanning salons on almost every corner. A recent survey of 116 U.S. cities found an average of 42 tanning salons per city, which means tanning salons are more prevalent than Starbucks® or McDonalds®. We are very concerned that this tanning behavior will lead to a continued increase in the incidence of skin cancer in young people and ultimately more untimely deaths from this devastating disease.”
At current rates, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Approximately 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma, and the incidence of melanoma has been rising for at least 30 years – particularly among young, white women in most recent years.

At DePasquale, The Spa, the owners have implemented a new ventilation system designed to keep air chemical-free for its stylists and customers. Without proper air ventilation ingredients found in popular hair straightening treatments have caused side effects that range from respiratory problems to skin irritation. At DePasquale, The Spa a new device is used in a designated area of the salon to scrub these potentially harmful vapors from the air and create a more healthful salon environment. This system is a specialized ventilation device designed to absorb and remove keratin treatment vapors from the air. In addition to creating a very well ventilated area for stylists and salon patrons, the device lowers the potential for excessive inhalation exposure.
“As a salon owner I want to make sure that I am taking every possible precaution to ensure a safe atmosphere in my salon,” said Justin DePasquale, co-owner of DePasquale, The Spa. “This is a great solution for my customers because now I can provide the service they are demanding while in a clean and safe environment for my employees.”

The average human emits approximately 95 watts of energy as heat in the form of infrared light. A standard 100 watt incandescent light bulb emits only about five percent of its energy as visible light, the rest is given off as heat in the form of infrared light. This means the average human produces the same amount of heat as a 100 watt light bulb.
A common skin condition, rosacea affects more than 16 million Americans. It is a non-contagious facial skin disorder that usually begins as a redness, like a blush, appearing on the face – most often on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. Typically, rosacea symptoms appear in adults between the ages of 30 and 50 and usually impacts women more often than men. At first, the redness may come and go, but over time, it can become more persistent, presenting visible blood vessels. If left untreated, bumps and tiny pimples may develop.
David J. Goldberg, M.D., a dermatologist that is recognized nationally and internationally for his innovative work with skin lasers, cosmetic dermatology, and facial rejuvenation techniques, recommends some laser and light treatments for the flushing reaction of rosacea.
Laser and Light Treatments: The Nd:YAG Laser is used to treat visible blood vessels associated with rosacea and is less likely to cause bruising. YAG laser gets deeper down to the blood vessels but requires technical expertise. In addition, the pulsed dye laser helps with superficial redness and when used in combination, the two treatments can provide positive results. When a red light emitting LED treatment is added, the inflammation associated with rosacea decreases. By using this technique of all three laser and light source treatments together in a series of monthly treatments dramatic results have been provided to rosacea suffers.
According to the National Rosacea Society, rosacea patients can improve their chances of maintaining remission by identifying and avoiding lifestyle and environmental factors such as extreme weather and sun exposure, stress, spicy foods, and alcohol. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to controlling rosacea.
Intercon Solutions is partnering with PrettyCity.com this month to encourage spas and salons to properly recycle electronic waste, bulbs, and packaging during the annual “Green and Gorgeous” eco-friendly beauty and wellness campaign.
The average spa creates thousands of pounds of waste annually; waste such as plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, and packaging. In addition, even sustainable spas may be unwittingly contributing to land filling by not properly recycling their out-of-date electronics.
Intercon Solutions properly recycles – never land filling – products ranging from bulbs to obsolete computers. Out of use spa equipment can also be recycled by Intercon Solutions, an R2/RIOS and NAID AAA certified recycler.

The argan tree (argania spinosa) is perfect for a harsh environment, surviving heat, drought, and poor soil.
The argan tree is little known outside Morocco, and many Moroccans themselves have never heard of it because it grows only in the south-west of the country – roughly between Essaouira and Agadir, in an area covering 700,000 - 800,000 hectares. But within the area where the argan grows there are about 21 million trees which play a vital role in the food chain and the environment, though their numbers are declining, it is thought the modern rediscovery of this precious oil will halt the decline in tree numbers.
The tree, which is thorny and can reach heights of eight to10 meters, probably originated in Argana, a village north-east of Agadir. It lives longer than the olive and requires no cultivation.
The trunk of the argan is often twisted and gnarled, allowing goats to clamber along its branches and feed on the leaves and fruit.
When goats eat the fruit, the fleshy part is digested but the nut remains. Later, the nuts are collected by farmers to produce oil.
The fruit has a green, fleshy exterior like an olive, but larger and rounder. Inside, there is a nut with an extremely hard shell, which in turn contains one, two, or three almond-shaped kernels.
The production of argan oil, which is still mostly done by traditional methods, is a lengthy process; it is said that producing one liter of oil takes 20 hours worth of work.
In the Southwestern parts of Morocco, argan oil is extracted from the nuts of argan trees. Often times referred to as “liquid gold,” this oil has recently been classified, on the World Heritage List, as endangered due to its severe exploitation.
The process used to extract this precious oil from the argan tree is a manual and laborious process that has become a tradition among the local Berber women. The production of argan oil allows these women to gain social benefits in a country where equal rights are not yet fully established; affording them a sustainable livelihood and an opportunity to earn fair wages.
Over the years, the Berber women have formed cooperatives to keep the production techniques, manufacturing, and controlling of argan oil in check. As mentioned before, the process of manually producing this oil is laborious. The initial stage of this process is the actual removal of the nut from the fruit. Next, the shell of each nut is forcibly opened to obtain the kernel. Once all of the kernels are collected they are roasted over mild heat. Then, the roasted kernels are left to cool, ground in a quern made out of stone, and then blended with water into dough.
Mechanical presses are now becoming more widely used for efficiency reasons. The process of cracking the nuts of the argan tree is still done by hand, but after the roasting of the kernels, the nuts are ground and extracted using a mechanical press. As a result of this time consuming and labor intensive process, whether it is manual or mechanical, the oil from this tree is quite costly, however the great number of benefits received from the oil itself increases the value substantially.
In regards to our personal health and beauty, argan oil is an outstanding choice. There are two types of argan oil, one used for cosmetic purposes and one for culinary purposes. As a culinary medium, argan oil is slightly darker than olive oil, with a reddish tinge and it is appreciated for its unique, rich flavor. Beyond its taste the oil is also known for its health benefits helping a person’s body effectively control cholesterol – due to its monosaturated fat and oleic acid content; it assists in stimulating circulation; and helps strengthen the body’s natural defenses.
Beyond its nutritional benefits, argan oil has many beautifying effects as well. As a cosmetic medium, The oil is magnificent for the hair, skin, and nails. In addition, argan oil is a rich source for vitamin E (a strong antioxidant) making it a great way to combat the aging process. Another benefit from this oil is its ability to assist in locking moisture within the skin’s cells. The reduction of moisture evaporation, upon contact, is another benefit from the use of the oil on the skin making it an excellent choice to use after waxing.
From internally assisting the body in maintaining a healthy life to externally nurturing the skin thereby stimulating a natural youthfulness, argan oil provides unparalleled results making it worthy of its informal title… “liquid gold.”

Preventice, Inc. a leading developer of mobile health systems announces that it will collaborate with Mayo Clinic to introduce health applications based on cloud computing and mobile phone technology. The first application from this collaboration is the CARD System.
Millions of Americans suffer from skin allergies. A National Ambulatory Medical Care survey conducted in 1995 estimated that 8.4 million people visit their doctor because of skin allergies. Meanwhile, allergic reactions to skin care and cosmetic products were the second most frequent dermatologic diagnosis.
Licensed from Mayo Clinic, the CARD System gives physicians and patients instant access to information about chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances in skin care products that cause allergic skin reactions. The CARD System helps patients find safe products while shopping, track their allergic reactions, and electronically share information with their physician.
Hereditary breast cancer is rare. However, women with a family history of breast cancer can be at higher risk of developing the disease.
Breakthrough Breast Cancer has developed a new guide for people with a family history of breast cancer. It sets out what a family history is and how your risk is assessed, including genetic testing options. It explains what breast screening is available to people at higher risk of breast cancer and ways to manage risk.
This new guide is based on the latest available evidence, together with the experiences of women with breast cancer.
Hereditary breast cancer is associated with patterns of cancer in families. Defining a family history of breast cancer is quite complex. Breakthrough Breast Cancer defines a person’s family history as having an unusually high number of close relatives with breast cancer, often at a younger age than would normally be expected. So, having one relative diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 50 or older usually would not mean that you have a family history. Other factors that can contribute to a family history are cases of male breast cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer in both breasts, or having Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.
A family history can be classed as moderate or strong, based on the number of family members on the same side of your family with the breast cancer, how closely related they are to you, and the age they were diagnosed with the disease.
If you are concerned about any history of cancer in your family, speak with your doctor.

Calling attention to a disease that kills one American every hour. Melanoma however, if detected early, can often be successfully treated.
NYU Langone’s ABCDEs of Melanoma Still a Critical Detection Guide
Over 25 years ago, NYU Langone Medical Center developed the ABCDEs – a melanoma detection guide that provides criteria for diagnosing skin cancer including melanoma. Created by dermatologists at NYU Langone, the ABCDEs are a quick and simple guide for self examination of the skin in order to detect moles that could be cancerous. The ABCDEs for melanoma detection are:
A is for Asymmetry where one-half of the mole is unlike the other. B is for Border where the mole is irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined. C is for Color which varies from one area to another or has different shades of tan, brown, black, and sometimes white, red, or blue. D is for Diameter of a mole when it is bigger than the size of a pencil eraser. E is for Evolving or changing in size, shape, or color.

Skin Cancer Checks Important for Everyone: Including African-Americans
While uncommon, skin cancer can occur in African-Americans. African-American’s typically do not worry about skin cancer and as a result do not have regular skin cancer screenings. However, dermatologists recommend that African-Americans get annual skin cancer exams and use sunscreen diligently because when skin cancer does occurs within this population the mortality tends to be high due to late detection. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer in African-Americans while basal cell carcinoma is the rarest. Malignant melanoma, the most deadly of the skin cancers, occurs in African-Americans most often on the palms or the soles of the feet. The incidence of melanoma is about 1.1 cases a year for every 100,000 African-Americans.
UVA Radiation Damages DNA in Human Melanocyte Skin Cells – Causing Mutations that Can Lead to Melanoma
A study by researchers at NYU School of Medicine found that UVA radiation damages the DNA in human melanocyte cells, causing mutations that can lead to melanoma. Melanocytes, which contain a substance called melanin that darkens the skin to protect it from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, are more vulnerable to UVA radiation than normal skin cells because they are unable to repair themselves as efficiently.
This is the first time, UVA rays have been shown to cause significant damage to the DNA of human melanocyte skin cells and because melanocytes have a reduced capacity to repair DNA damage from UVA radiation, they mutate more frequently, potentially leading to the development of melanoma. This finding that helps identify the underlying cause of melanoma may allow researchers to develop new ways to assess a person’s risk of melanoma, prevent the disease, and aid in the design of more effective treatments.
NYU Langone Study Investigates Genetic Factorsof Melanoma
NYU Langone is conducting a new study designed to investigate the genetic factors that may predispose patients to develop melanoma. Enrollment in the study includes a short questionnaire, a photograph of their back to assess the number of moles and sun damage to their skin, and a sample of their saliva to collect their DNA. Once enough study samples are collected the DNA of melanoma patients will be compared with the DNA of non-melanoma patients to identify any gene variations.
High Risk for Melanoma: Do You Have a Skin History?
Are you high risk for melanoma? Do you have a significant amount of moles, especially some that are atypical? If so, a new total body photography and mole-mapping tool called MoleSafe may be the best way to be screened fully for melanoma. The technology creates a digital, baseline skin history and allows dermatologists to track any suspicious moles or future changes in your skin over time. NYU Langone was the first academic medical center in the U.S. to use this tool – combining full body photography with the skills of highly qualified dermatologists to diagnose melanoma at the earliest possible stage.

Patients with acne and rosacea are often confused about selecting appropriate skin care products, cosmeceuticals, and cosmetics to add into their daily routine. While they want to continue to see results with the treatment regimen from their dermatologist, they also want to be comfortable using products that address other skin issues, such as wrinkles or that protect their skin, such as sunscreens. They also may want to select skin care products that can help improve the overall appearance and health of the skin during treatment, especially if their medications have left their skin with redness, dryness, or inflammation.
At the 69th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy), dermatologist Diane S. Berson, M.D., FAAD, discussed how proper skin care and using some of the newly formulated cosmeceuticals can improve the skin of acne and rosacea patients, as well as helping them comply with their treatment regimen.
Cleansing 101: Gentle, Gentle, Gentle
When it comes to cleansing the skin, Berson recommends gentle cleaning and cleansers for skin prone to acne and rosacea. Scrubbing the skin will actually worsen acne, as it can remove skin lipids and can increase irritation. Instead, Berson recommends gently washing with a non-irritating, pH balanced cleanser to decrease inflammation. She also recommends the use of body washes, which contain moisturizers that can deposit moisture back into the skin.
Moisturizers: Good for All
It is a common myth that patients with acne should not use moisturizers, but Berson explains that this is simply not true. If patients do not use a daily moisturizer, their skin can become red and peel easily due to the drying effect of their acne medications. By using a moisturizer, patients counter the effects of these medications by adding moisture back into the skin. For patients with rosacea, Berson notes that their skin is more sensitive and likely to react to ingredients in both prescription medications and skin care products. Moisturizers containing lipids, such as ceramides, are usually well tolerated and improve the barrier that is often compromised in patients with this condition.
New Technologies Improving Sunscreen Formulations
While the health consequences of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight and artificial light sources are well known, some acne and rosacea patients might not be aware that sunlight can also further aggravate their condition. Berson recommends the daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB light.
Cosmetics and Cosmeceuticals Offer Many Skin Benefits
Manufacturers of cosmetics and cosmeceuticals are continually improving their products by adding ingredients that offer many benefits to the skin, including skin affected by acne or rosacea. Many nonprescription acne products now contain salicylic acid to reduce inflammation and help exfoliate in and around the pores.
In conclusion, according to Berson, when the skin is stripped of lipids, which are part of its protective outer layer, the skin barrier is compromised and can worsen acne and rosacea, by keeping the skin well hydrated with the proper skin care products, the barrier will stay intact, allowing patients to better tolerate their medications.

The wide use of professional-use hair smoothing products containing keratin has sparked varying concerns regarding ingredients and questions around potential safety issues. In response to this industry-wide issue and to help educate and inform the industry, the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) has released a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document, which is the industry's most current, comprehensive, and objective report on the keratin smoothing product category. In addition to the FAQs, PBA formally requested that the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) take up a re-examination of the use of formaldehyde-releasers in cosmetics, and initiate a formal examination of methylene glycol in personal care and beauty products.
The PBA would like to reiterate the need for manufacturers and distributors of these products to provide stylists and other industry professionals with up-to-date information, training, and education about how to safely apply and handle keratin products.

Out of all the plants in Mother Nature's garden, lavender is the crown jewel. It is one of the safest and most widely used of them all – a modern day multi-tasker. It is fragrant, colorful, edible while at the same time both stimulating and soothing. Its therapeutic benefits are well documented. Every home and spa should keep a bottle of lavender within reach.
Lavender oil's treasure chest of antiseptic and therapeutic properties comes from its natural alcohol linalool, ketones, esters, and aldehydes content; which exceptionally complement one another. Linalool kills bacteria and viruses as well as helps to heal skin irritations including burns, wounds, acne, and sores. The aldehydes in lavender are responsible for its distinct aroma and soothing properties. The ketones in lavender effectively reduce pain and inflammation and help induce sleep. The esters in lavender reduce soreness and swelling, fight fungal infections, and prevent scarring.
Medicinal Uses: Lavender is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, sedative, and detoxifier which promotes healing and prevents scarring while it also stimulates the immune system and contributes to the healing process by stimulating the cells of a wound to regenerate more quickly. Almost all parts of the plant have a medicinal value which makes it a truly indispensable oil.
Some Quick Home Remedies: Insomnia Mix ten drops of lavender oil to four ounces of water into a spray bottle, lightly spray your pillow and let dry.
Minor skin irritations Mix three drops of lavender oil with one quart of distilled water and dab on affected area daily.
Cosmetic Uses: Its versatility makes it suitable for all skin types, including a couperose complexion. Lavender oil is a cell regenerator that helps prevent scarring and stretch marks, it has a reputation for slowing down the appearance of wrinkles. It can be used on sun-damaged skin, wounds, rashes, skin infections, varicose veins, and anything swollen. There is no better remedy for burns than lavender. This is one of the few oils that can be used undiluted to stop the itching of insect bites and on small, first-degree burns several times during the day for treatment.
Emotional Benefits: Lavender has a balancing effect on the emotions, it both relaxes and stimulates, depending on the dosage. Quite a few studies on lavender have shown that the scent alone helps counter insomnia, depression, mental stress, anger, anxiety, improves concentration levels, one's mood, and memory.
Quick tip Anytime you are feeling a little overwhelmed or stressed simply add a few drops of lavender oil to a cotton square or piece of gauze and hold it close to your nose and take several deep inhalations. Store it in a plastic bag to use again later.
Culinary Uses: Using lavender in foods may seem odd when one first thinks about it, but it is not much different than adding mint or rosemary to other recipes. Lavender adds a little delicate surprise that makes your palate sit up and pay attention. All lavenders are edible, though the nuances of flavor vary widely.
As you can see there is no limit to the myriad uses of lavender. Okay, maybe it cannot do everything on your wish list, but it can do quite a bit. From medicine cabinet to the kitchen cabinet the power of lavender truly makes it a "miracle herb." There are few plants in the world that are as naturally powerful and beneficial as the lavender plant. These plants and their wonderful blossoms have healed many for centuries. Its popularity continues to grow and likely will for generations to come.
We all know we need to eat our veggies, especially with the new wave of processed food companies touting how their sauces and canned pastas now contain a full day’s allotment of vegetables.
It is a tricky definition of terms. It is really not as healthy to eat processed foods to begin with, but for them to say that using vegetables as fillers somehow makes processed foods healthy is disingenuous, at best. It is like saying “Don’t pay attention to all the chemicals, dyes, and sodium we put in the can – there is vegetables in there, too, so that makes it all okay!” We need to eat actual vegetables if we want to have a real healthy diet, and there are five key veggies at the top of this list that are the healthiest, they include: Spinach – Popeye was right. Spinach is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B2, calcium, potassium, and vitamin B6. It is also a good source of fiber, copper, protein, phosphorous, zinc, vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids, niacin, and antioxidants.
Lettuce (greenleaf, red leaf, romaine) – Lettuce is a low calorie fiber food that is also a great place to find vitamin A, folic acid, lactucarium (which helps enhance calmness and pain relief), as well as the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Lettuce also contains a good amount of anti-cancer properties.
Broccoli – Besides having great flavor and texture, Broccoli contains copious amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, and vitamin K. The minerals in broccoli include calcium, potassium, iron, and folate. A great source of fiber, broccoli also provides lots of bioflavonoids, which is an antioxidant that helps protect against cancer and heart disease.
Brussel sprouts – A staple in the diets of Asian cultures, who are among the longest lived people in the world, the crunchy garnish contains lots of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, beta carotene, and vitamin K. This is also another great anti-cancer vegetable.
Cabbage – Although best known as the partner of corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day, cabbage is a great low calorie food that contains a good amount of fiber, calcium, and vitamin C. Cabbage is incredibly packed with substantial anti-cancer agents.
When picking vegetables, fresh and frozen vegetables are better than canned vegetables, because they have less added salt. If you have to buy canned vegetables, I recommend draining the water they are packed in before preparing them to remove a good amount of the added sodium, or simply buy those veggies labeled as having low sodium.
Broccoli, cabbage, and brussel sprouts also contain glucosinolates, which are known for their chemoprotective agents against chemically-induced carcinogens by blocking the initiation of tumors in the liver, colon, breasts, and pancreas. These anti-cancer compounds are released more effectively when you chop those vegetables before serving, and serving them raw increases the anti-cancer benefits even more.
With all this said, I believe that it is important to note that through research I have found that the vitamin numbers go up when vegetables are cooked, but the anti-cancer compounds go down. So, I suggest that you steam or roast your vegetables in a pan for no more than seven minutes, which has proven to be a good way to keep the anti-cancer compounds and make it more edible.
Remember the olden days when you mostly talked on phones? The phone was always plugged into your business or home wall and it was used only for conversation. Those days are long gone. Seems like more and more people use their phone, or nowadays it is called a “mobile device,” for many things - except talking! Many medical spa employees and owners find that their mobile devices are useful for a lot of things:

Re-create this Spring’s must-have look – sultry, smokey, mossy-green eyes. Nothing says “hello” better than a glance from a pair of sexy eyes and all it takes are these three simple elements – boldly lined eyes, colorful smokey lids, and voluminous lashes:
MenScience Androceuticals published proprietary research that shows men often choose vanity over the health of their skin. MenScience conducted a poll of 167 men, ages 20 to 55, and asked them about their sunscreen usage. While most men agreed that sunscreen was necessary (90 percent of respondents) and regret not using it in the past (57 percent of respondents), less than half of the men polled actually used a sunscreen daily. One-third of men did not use a sunscreen because they preferred to look tan, even if it caused skin problems later on in life. Almost half of the men did not wear sunscreen because they did not like the way it felt.
