Lipstick is Instant Gratification

Written by   Noreen Young, L.E., owner of Noreen Young Cosmetics

When a woman is blue, she knows just what to do. She buys herself a new lipstick! A survey says that 75 percent of women believe that wearing lipstick improves their confidence and makes them look and feel better. It is definitely a cheap thrill. If a spa does not retail lipsticks, clients are buying it elsewhere after they leave the spa. Even in tough economic times, lipsticks sell! They do not take up a lot of space and are a wonderful impulse item.

Making up the lips is a quick demonstration that sells!

Lipsticks
When it comes to lipsticks, spas should carry a nice array of shades. They should also carry at least one brand of lip stain lipsticks or lip glosses. They are all-the-rage and last longer on the lips than regular lipsticks. Do not miss out on this big seller and be sure to show it off
to clients.
When demonstrating lipstick application to clients, be sure to use a lip brush. A lip brush offers a professional application and makes the clients’ lip shade look better and
last longer.
If clients want another dimension added to their pout, add some shimmer lipstick to their lips! Shimmer lipsticks should be added to a spa’s collection for a sexy, perfect pucker. They are also great shades to lighten dark lipsticks and illuminate
the lips.
Another key demonstration technique to show your clients is how to use proper color on the lips. Teach your clients… the darker the lipstick they wear, the smaller the lips will appear. The lighter or more medium-tone a lipstick is, the fuller the lips will appear. Clients can purchase multiple shades to see what they enjoy the best. Many spas have lipstick clubs where they offer deals like, “Buy six, get the seventh one free!”

Conditioners
Most clients wear a lipstick, but they may not use a lip conditioner. Turn them on to one and professionally recommend they use it day and/or night. Have your clients kiss their dry lips goodnight by offering them a super-hydrating lip
treatment balm. Cracked, dry, flaky lips love a little tender love and care. Lip treatments with vitamin E can be used to correct the problem. Men love it, too!
And speaking of men, did you know that males get cancer of the lips more often than women? This is because females wear lipsticks/lip balms. This is why spas should retail a lip conditioner just for men.

Lip Liners
Lip pencils give shape and definition to the mouth and make lipstick last longer. They are still on trend, but advise clients to steer clear from dark lip liner hues.
To make lips look fuller, outline the client’s lips with lip liner slightly outside the lip line. On the other hand, to make lips look smaller, apply lip liner inside the rim of the lip.
And speaking of lip liners, a definite beauty flashback is invisible lip liner! Invisible lip liner is back in a big way and magically keeps lipstick or lip gloss from running outside the lip area. It is great for people who do not like lip liner but want to keep the shade in place.

Other Uses
Tinted lip gloss can be substituted for a blush when blended quickly on the cheek and tapped with warmth of the finger for a rosy, healthy glow tint. Clients love when you share beauty tips!
Teach your clients how to savor the last drop of their lipstick or lip balm, including ones that have melted, broken, or been discontinued. A retail idea to carry is a compact (empty) for your clients to store their lip products and mix and match. Clients will appreciate the eco-friendly and do-it-yourself twist.
