Candy-Inspired Makeup Trends

Written by   Pamela Taylor, professional makeup artist

This season’s colorful palette is reminiscent of a vintage candy shop, with shades ranging from pixie-stick blue to crystal pink.

When applying seasonal trends, such as this season’s brighter hues, it is important to keep the client in mind. In the event that a client has superficial facial lines and/or crepey skin, stay away from pure pigmented color over the entire eyelid. Instead, use a colored eyeliner applied in a matte, non-pearlized shade. This color can also be applied as a liner to enhance the eyes and keep with the trend. Professionals can also choose to apply color and texture according to the client’s eye shape, using a blend of matte and pearl shades.
Color trends featuring strong pigments on eyes, lips, and cheeks should be strategically applied. When working with a palette, create a sheer color wash, adding pigment to the cheek, eyes, or lips. Professionals should also consider when to use a sheer, cream-based cheek glaze versus powdered, pearlized finishes.
When applying this trend to mature clients, use hints of color according to their skin type and texture. For a more mature client, make sure that the correct texture is applied to the area. For example, a client with deep lip lines should avoid brightly-pigmented lip gloss and/or products that can bleed into the lip lines; instead, opt for a lip stain in a complementary shade.

Untitled-2Shades of Blue
This season, blue has proven to be one of the hottest colors. Depending on the hue of blue chosen, anyone can wear this shade. Professionals should select a blue that works with the client’s eye color.
For clients with brown eyes, complimentary shades of blue can enhance the eye color range from amber and chestnut to ebony. Clients with blue eyes should use a monochromatic blue hue (powder to indigo) to enhance the eye color. Opt for warmer shades of blue with clients with green eyes, such as aqua blue, which has a warmer yellow undertone.
When applying a dramatic blue eye, the client’s lips should be neutral, such as a nude peach or coral shade. The lip should not compete with the strength of the eye shadow or texture. It is also best to try to avoid an over-glossed or shimmer finish on the lips when applying a dramatic eye color.
Transforming an exotic blue eye look from day to evening can be a simple and easy change. Clients can add highlights to the upper outer eyebrow area, applying a stroke of eyeliner (according to the eye shape) and a deliberate application of a quality mascara. Another great option is to apply a selection of quality, individual eyelashes to complete the look.
